Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Was it a wild one? I read the Mallards were high on the AI list. We've been lucky not to have any problems here. Crows routinely go in our duck house and steal food, plus we have wild bird feeders. My biggest problem is one you may not believe...a wild turkey that lives here. More on that long story later.
Waiting for the turkey story...

Not trying to bring politics into this forum, but I came across an interesting story here regarding local control over chicken-keeping ordinances. It's nice to see that there is some support in the state legislature to allow more fair treatment across the state.

Chickens OK in Detroit but not in Midland Township
Sounds like the local bureaucrats think they are an HOA. You need 5 acres to own chickens? Madness.

I just had some friends who have been going through court hearings in order to keep their goats. They've had goats for 30 years and are down to their final two. An officer came out to the property to respond to a different issue and filed a code violation for the goats. The committee finally ruled to let them keep the goats but no more after these two pass. They had to pay thousands in legal fees. None of the neighbors complained or even knew they had goats!

I'm sure I could be coded if the ordinance guy really wanted to be a stickler. I found out recently that my coop needs to be 50 feet back from the property line, and it's maybe 20 feet back from the road. Even though I live on ag land and all my neighbors are cool with my birds.
