Where is everyone???
Baby announcement! One of my olive egger pullets decided to go broody in November, on 20 eggs, most likely infertile ( young Australorp rooster, who hasn't impressed most of the hens yet).
She has four chicks, and is being a great mama so far, fantastic! Can't get pictures yet, she's taking good care of them, and it's pretty cold out there.
Didn't need these chicks, but here we are, love it!

Chick update, not so good.
When I checked on them this noon, two were dead, one was fine, and one was standing in the waterer. OMG! I hustled around, setting up a dog crate and brooder plate in the house downstairs, and by the time i went to get the chicks, the one who was in the waterer looked dead too.
I brought them all inside, and the only sign of life was moist eyes and no rigor mortis. Heat, moving him around on the warm surface, and gradually he came back to life!
Both chicks are in the dog crate, eating and have a small chick waterer, and I hope will survive. Mama just couldn't cope with these babies, moving around in the cold was too much for them.
Not the best day ever, but maybe two chicks can make it, and no broodiness until spring! Definitely!

I'm glad you were able to resuscitate the one. Sorry about the two that didn't make it.

Down to 2° F tonight, plus wind. that everyone's feathered friends stay warm enough.

That's headed our way, in Eastern NC. It won't be as frigid as you're experiencing, but borderline record cold for us, at 15°.

There will be a lot of perennials lost in ENC gardens.

Second update: this morning the chick who 'came back' yesterday is dead, so only one living chick. Anyone have chicks right now? Possibly mama bird will accept her back, in a cage at the house?!? May have to try today, it's just wrong to have only one chick, all alone.
