Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I have heard it said so often how chicks grow into an ugly or awkward stage. Personally, I never did see my chicks grow ugly or awkward. They just grew and changed. Now I hear people talk about molting. Being a newbie at this, I am wondering if my chicks are in molt. They don't seem like they are looking any different except that they are continuing to grow, but the immense number of feathers all over makes me wonder, is this molt? Does anyone have pictures of their birds in molt? What should I be looking for to identify this stage, and when does molt usually take place? Do they need more protein when in molt?

Ok, did some basic research. Should have done that before asking I guess. 18 months or so for a first molt. Hmmmmm. But the question still remains. My chicks are only 14 weeks old, and losing a ton of feathers. Additionally, I have seen them eating some of the feathers. I DID look that up and found that it was a protein deficiency. They get 21% protein from their feed, along with sunflower and other seeds, cooked sweet potatoes, tons of kitchen scraps, melons, garden scraps, cottage cheese, canned tuna, raisins, and even a half of a salmon from the freezer. Whatever, pretty much. (No, they are not spoiled - LOL) So what gives? What am I missing???

Lime is well known in the dog world to reduce odors in the yard/kennels which is one reason I use it. I also wondered if it would be safe for the chicken yard if it started to smell.
I just read today on a feed bag to use FOOD grade lime or oyster shell to supplement hen's calcium...............?
my latest....dyed my hair a dark burgundy red which I actually really like and have gotten a lot of compliments on...the stepford wives are in shock however.....

I haven't had the gusto to go really bright, but i love the high intensity look also! Cheers!

The issue for me is that i am looking at the very real possibility of having to back to being a factory drone, at ironically the same wages where i started YEARS ago. I have debts which are going to go into default if i don't start paying soon, i have staved them off as long as i could hoping something better would come along. I am hoping to use this to work on my workplace skills and use the $$$ towards establishing a better basic wardrobe, and a car, so at the next job i will be better prepared. (Just ask Nova, she saw our 1983 rustmobile, lol) Old chevy truck, i love them but not good for going around every day! ($)
And even in "oh just wear jeans and t-shirt" level i was still also warned that i should dress more "feminine" when i was trying for a promo.

This was a higher up lady friend, so i know she was trying to be helpful and not mean. So i definitely have to work on it i think, but i had wanted to see if this was all over, or if i was imagining it! Thanks guys for the helpful replys. :)

Do they need more protein when in molt?
I give my big girls extra, it helps so as not to stress the body since they use a lot of protein to make feathers. You will see them eating feathers off the ground sometimes during this time, which is an indication you may want to up it.

I have been trying. Do you have suggestion as to how? The feed is already at 21%, and from what I think I understand so far, they should have minimum 20%. I have been adding the other stuff more and more, even checking labels at the grocery store to find anything with higher protein levels. I'm just at a loss if it's not enough protein now with what they are getting, what else should I try? Is there possibly some other reason that I am seeing so many feathers and that they are eating them. Since they are only 14 weeks and first molt is generally around 18 months (right?) what else can be causing this??

My chicks thought chasing and eating feathers was the best game in the world. I assumed it was their way of replacing nutrients lost when growing new feathers along with the instinct of chasing anything that moves lol.

My BR, BO, and EE were never gawky but my JG are definately in the gawky stage at 13 weeks lol. They're almost as big as my 22 week old layers but just not as filled out; looks like a strong wind would knock them over

Mine are 2 weeks ahead of yours. I'm chalking the feathers (everywhere!) up to adolescent feathers making way for the growth of more mature feathers. I didn't even consider there might be a problem with the feather loss. Uh-oh. After googling "why are my chickens eating their feathers" we've offered yogurt for protein here. That stopped it.

is ANYbody else in Michigan raising the white Chantecler's. I got 2 roosters out of the Greg Oakes line from Ontario and they are fighting something fierce now. I need to rehome one of them. They are just over 10 weeks old and beautiful. I am willing to travel to rehome this fella as he was an expensive egg to start with. Do NOT want to put a bird like this in the freezer by any means, they are a rare breed. Pic's enclosed.
Here are some of them at 9 weeks...note the lack of combs and wattles, they are bred for the cold winters of Ontario. Asking $20 for a rooster. I can get better pic also.

better pics of the white Chantecler roosters...
the sllightly more mature one first 3 pics:

the one in the back:

Less mature one: comb and wattles a little less red and developed

I'm calling them Casper and Spooky for the time being.

Ok want to see some HANDSOME roosters. One of the cochins, a sizzle, the showgirls are all up for grabs. Maybe you need a rooster but just don't know it yet! Anyway they are all so cute it they just had attitudes to match. The problem is my son has 3 of them that he doesn't want to part with. And that doesn't count my 3 adult roosters.
