There has been a recent resurgence in certain diseases due to lax vaccination protocols. Among those are Whooping Cough in people (one of the things now added to tetanus - called pertusus), and Leptospirosis on dogs. the increased incidence of disease is directly related to decreased vaccination, as people often feel that since a disease is no longer very common there is no need to vaccinate for it. Diseases are not cured by vaccination, only prevented. If we were to stop vaccinating against a disease such as polio, it would only be a matter of time before it was again a common disease. Oh, and Whooping Cough in adults is a bad thing to experience.

Raz, after you have kept birds in the same spot year after year, parasites such as coccidia will build up in the environment and be a bigger risk for young birds.
And yes, Little Boy Blue is a hatch mate to your little girl.

The whooping cough issue is definitely a big issue. One of the main problems is that while uncomfortable, it doesn't cause a serious disease in children and adults, most of the time. However, it is life threatening when infants contract the disease. Infants don't get any pertussis vaccination until they are older. So an unvaxed adult or child can very easily expose an infant to an illness than can kill.

A relative in the medical field told me of this fiasco that happened in the OB ward she worked at. Some brain dead parent let their child with an active case of whooping cough visit the newborn baby of a friend, while they were still at the hospital. Not only was a baby who was less than 24 hours old exposed, but the child could have exposed all the other babies on the unit. It could have been worse, if a nurse didn't hear that child "whoop" and made sure it didn't become a baby death incident with proper quarantine and close monitoring of the baby that had been held by the child with pertussis.

Fuzzy- I will be happy to incubate the eggs for you. You know where is my dad's store is, you can drop them off there, and one of my family members can bring them home if I am at work. But I have a rule that all eggs that are not from my flock that is going to my incubator is dipped.

It's true that the hatchery Marans typically do not lay a very dark egg.

Not sure who these local breeders with diseased flocks are, and I certainly hope that no one has referred to my flocks in this regard - I practice very strict biosecurity (in fact, I just gifted a bird to a fellow BYC-er who wanted to see my flocks - I told him I do not allow anyone back to my pens for biosecurity reasons). Do your research, check the birds out before purchasing (I box sale birds up and folks are free to inspect them before taking them), know the signs/symptoms of disease, and QUARANTINE for a minimum of 3 weeks.

Depending on where you live though, I might hit you up this Spring. But I'll have to do my research

This may be the better option... I am willing, but I can't dip then place under my Criptoe...
