Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I strained my brain through the first link, and from what i understand 50 units = 5,000 hens, and whether you have 1 or 4,999 they will need to be 100 feet from the edge of the property, they go from the outside of the pen/structure, not the middle. And there needs to be 5 or less residential houses, (not farms) within a quarter mile from your operation. ? BUT if you have more than that many birds, they only need be 25 feet more from the edge, so basically small guys are being slapped with the same restrictions as the big companies we are trying to avoid needing. :(

I think you are over-thinking the whole thing.
Very simply put, the proposed change means that your township can tell you where to put your chickens.
Or they can tell you that you can't have them at all.

It isn't where you went wrong, it is where society has gone wrong. I am not saying everyone needs or should have their own garden or fowl (even a patio pot vegetable garden would provide meager sustenance, though)! But when it becomes wrong to even grow some tomatoes, something seriously perverted has occurred. As more generations grow up in cities, they become so disconnected as to where their food comes from. I met someone when I lived in Milwaukee that truly believed chicken eggs were manufactured in a factory, like cadbury cream eggs are, as opposed to in a chicken's reproductive system.

Food is like...magic, to a lot of city folk. They don't know where it comes from, or even care. All that matters is that it appears on store shelves.

You just described my neighb...former friend.

I guess I'm feeling squirrely or something. I was at a meeting with some newly graduated Master Gardeners. I brought eggs to sell and quite a few people were surprised at the different sizes and colours.

After a bit of conversation about the sizes, colours, freshness and what not, a lady approached me and asked what was so special about my eggs. Before I could answer, her friend (with a smirk) told her that if she planted my eggs, she would get egg plants.

And I thought that I was a smart aleck!

Anyway, after convincing her (I hope) that eggs don't grow into eggplants, I gave her a dozen and asked her to compare them to her store bought white eggs. Oh, she mentioned that she had heard that brown eggs were spoiled. Where do people come up with these ideas?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

I come back after long few months gone and the Michigan thread gone I'm glad its back cause I'm back now. I just got my first egg the other day from my little white female leghorn we call Dot. Gosh I missed everyone. I have pics of my new coup to the DH and DD built for me nothing spectacular but it will do till i can paint it next year. I was hoping i could still do it this month but looking kinda grim for that anyway. How is everyone. So glad to be back

When we were discussing the flea thing...
YULK I have fleas so bad in my house... I am almost desperate....

I have put frontline on them (for 4 months straight now)
I have bathed
I have hand picked with tweezers
I have vacuumed
I have steam cleaned
I have used tea tree and eucalyptus
I have sprinkled Borax
I wanted to try putting a light over a dish of water at night, but the fire risk does not seem worth MAYBE catching a few fleas.

I have no idea what to do next...

And they are only going to get worse when the ones outside start breeding in all the dead leaves this fall.
I DO NOT WANT TO BOMB!!!

Do guineas eat fleas? I might just get a few house guineas...

PS I would like to state that Borax does not kill fleas. Not right away, not within hours. In fact, they will even burrow in it. I have 2 in a container with borax... they are still alive from this afternoon.
