Good morning Michigan

Song birds disappeared, frog ponds were paved over and we all sat by and said nothing. Life was good. (?)

Now, as I recognize the errors of our ways, I want to restore a small portion of what was lost. So I started in my own yard. I was actually making some progress. I have frogs, toads, lightning bugs and other native flora and fauna. I also have chickens for food and entertainment.

Now they tell me that because of this, I am a criminal. They tell me that I have to get rid of all this. They tell me that if I don't, I could go to jail. I can no longer grow a garden. I can no longer fish the streams because they are gone. I can't even have a couple of hens for eggs because they are "farm" animals and I live in the "city". Somehow, I became an outlaw.

Where did I go so wrong?

The problem is most don't. A couple generations of clueless citizens is all it takes.

Do guineas eat fleas? I might just get a few house guineas...

I have no idea if they would eat them but the thought of my boy and girls in the house is scary!

Pretty cool here ... they say 30's tonight. I dug out pants for the first time since spring. Off to a meeting and then farmer's market. I'm taking my winter coat with me.

Good morning HH, and the rest or Michigan! How wonderful was the rain? Boy did we need that. Up here, it has been quite some time since we have had any.

Yesterday my DS came home from school stating he wanted a rabbit. My first question was "Why?" He has a friend who raises them, and showed him pictures of some of them full grown. Among others, he raises California Giants.

Long story short, 2 rabbits are now in a temporary cage in the garage. He found a brand new metal hutch for $30 that he is getting today, and a trip to FFH this morning should satisfy the rest of the bunnies needs. I'll try to post a pic later.

To get rid of fleas you need to break their life cycle. The adults are the only stage on your pets. The eggs, larvae and pupae are in the carpet, furniture, bedding, ands other nice cozy places. Up to 90% of the total flea population is actually environmental, not on the pet. Use a Household product with an insect growth regulator (IGR) to prevent the eggs from hatching and the larvae from forming pupae. IGR's are flea hormone analogs the prevent the different stages from maturing into the next stage.

The exception to this is the pupa stage of the flea (the same as a butterfly cocoon). This stage is impervious to chemicals, and will continue to hatch out for 6-8 weeks after you treat, so keep a product on your pets that kills adult fleas for at least that long.

I had a passing thought...... I wonder if the ALBC (American Livestock Breeds Conservancy) would be interested in lending a hand with the RTF issue. As I see it, isn't it mostly the small hobby farmer that is interested in protecting the heritage species? Larger "commercial" farms are not interested in anything that won't make them profit. If many small farms are affected by the changes, this will ultimately affect heritage breeds as well......... just a thought.

Still trying to piece something together to write.

But for now, I have to go build a goat pen for the boys......no flat surface is safe...... including the one holding my beer yesterday! LOL!

That's a good idea Silly.

In addition to a pen for Ike & Mike, you should build them a playground with ramps and table tops to play on.
