Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Haven't mentioned in a while that the Up North Chicken Stock is in 2 weeks on the 22nd in Lovells, just east of Grayling. Have 14 possible attendees so far. There will be birds to sell/trade and food to eat. Just check the links in my signature.

Fuzzy,
The proposed changes would hurt all operations.
I've contacted the beekeepers organization and Silly is writing to a breeders group (I think).

Swampducks,
I'm glad you let the owl go. It stinks that it got some of your birds, but they are such majestic predators. The hawk that got into my coop at Oeaster has not been back.

My EE, Sandy just laid her first egg today and it's green... well, my husband informed me that it was actually gray, lol. We were waiting with baited breath because our first EE to lay, laid a brown egg and we were very bummed. So we're pretty excited. My son told me to photograph it and share it... as if I wouldn't anyway

They pretty much make fun of me for taking pictures of the chickens if they sneeze.

Well, so far, so good! She made it through the night! She has not eaten much and drinks little, but I know she had a full crop after the attack. She is still eliminating.
She is alert and fights when I pick her up and put her down. She seems relieved when I hold her, though.
The back of her head is covered in a new layer of triple A as of this afternoon. And the wound is not bleeding.
I let her see her buddy today and held them together. Then I put her in a seperate cage so she could see and hear him. I think they were both happy the other was okay. While I was holding them, he was a little too interrested in her boo boo, so I won't put them together for a while.
I have been giving her small amounts of childrens ibprophine. I hope it is helping.
Her left eye remains shut and is sore, but yesterday she let me look at it and it is still there, just tender.
I kept her in the garage last night with the heat lamp. She insisted on roosting so I gave her a few bricks to hop up on.

Thank you for all of you suggestions.
I wanted to be a vet when I was younger... I guess, I am getting my chance. Pet owning is not for the faint!

BYFMom - So sorry about your hen! I don't know what to do in that circumstance.
So rather than Friday being allowance day - any day that my kids chose to do work, they got paid. This has accomplished the goal of creating self motivated workers.
Thank you.
That is a great idea! I hate being the pushy mom... but I know BF and I don't want to be a bank either!
Well I have lost 11 chicks total, it is so sad,
So cute and my 6y love to be with them just watching them, he is really good with them and is taking the deaths quite well.
Oh NO! Sorry for all your losses! I am glad you got a refund.
I think children should know about death. My son is 3 and he knows a little about it. Death is part of life and there is no use sheltering them from that. Also, I don't know how religious you are, but it makes a great oportunity to teach that as well.
What if they are in a place that isn't nice and cozy? We have a bad problem with them in our basement.
I would try sprinkling DE on a concrete, wood, or dirt basement floor. If that didn't help, I would bomb! I would tape up the tank and the door and let the gases fly!
well, at some point today, my cuckoo marans cockeral decided to try to integrate himself in with the big girls. It didn't go well. His BCM girlfriend was sitting on the other side of the fence from him, at 940 at night, waiting for him to go into the coop I'm guessing. I thought that was sweet.
Poor guy... His girl was sitting there saying "I told you so!" LOL
Good luck! Maybe my experience can help you a little.
good luck
Thank you! I can't use super glue on this one... She is missing a bit of skin.
BackyardFarmMom, Some times it is amazing the wounds that chickens can recover from. Given the fact that the bird was still sitting up and alert some time after the attack I would try to save it myself. Good Luck!
Thank you Opa. It makes me feel better knowing you would try to save her! I have done all of the above and more.
Well, the Allie the Conqueror strikes again.
So her tally is now two chickens, one gerbil, and several wild mice.

Sorry for your losses
I know I'm a few pages behind, but fleas can live in concrete!!
I won the flea war, you can too!!!

They are just horrible creatures! I would bomb a basement if I had one... I would tape the door shut! I am anti-bomb!
That is such a beautiful photo! Love the colors! Congrats on the egg! Sandy layed a sandy egg for you!

Welcome Pam

Opa, if you ever find out the name of those roma plants, please post it!
I roasted 1/4 of a bushel of romas today in the oven at 250 degrees for a couple hours. Now I am going to blend them in the blender and freeze them.
