Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Well after such a hard 2 days on the death rate of the chicks, no new deaths in the last 24 hours and they seem happy and active! So hoping for a solid rate of health from them, we now have 40 chicks.

Thanks for your well wishes, I have another question.

I have the 3 laying hens that have been here a bit over 2 weeks, we are getting one egg a day, I thought they were all laying when I bought them. a day or 2 we have gotten 2 eggs but never a 3 egg day. Does this seem normal?

How long should we give them to wait before they just might not be laying at all?

Have the hens been molting by chance? I know that mine back off on laying a bit during this time.

They changed the regulations for hunting this past year, so as long as we're on private land and have a mentor permit, DS *could* shoot a deer. (If I'm reading the new rules correctly?) He'll be 7 in the end of October. He's been tagging along with DH for the past 2 years, so he understands the basics of everything. We're not sure if he would even be interested in doing the actual shooting this year, or if DH and I would be OK with that. We need to talk about it, but I have to have a night off work for that to happen.

Last year was my son's first year at 10 which made me a bit nervous but he had taken hunters safety. Also if he is hunting it means I don't have to feel bad that I'm not because he uses my rifle.

Raz: easy answer, put "watch the Muppets" on the chore list.

I have a heck of of a lot of anise seeds to harvest! Anyone want anise seeds? We have way, way more than I'll be able to use in a year. Can chickens eat anise?

Dont sweat the eggs. Your not always going to get 3 eggs daily if you have 3 hens. There egg rate is really not completely 1 egg daily. Its a little more like a day and a half. So as all the egg frequency overlaps with all the birds you may be lucky where it falls on 3 eggs on a given day. So every 2-4 days you will average out to where you will go out and have 3 eggs. Most of the time you will get about 2.

Good Morning.

to the newbies!! I've got a couple of roosters I need to get rid of also. I went to the bad neighbor and told him sorry about the roos and that I was looking for homes for them. He then told me not to worry, they don't bother him!

He's the one that called the ordinance on me a couple of years ago!! But the new neighbors didn't seem to happy about them. So, still looking for homes for two beautiful bantam favorolle roos.
I also remembered to e mail the guy about the gamps. Hopefully you all do too. Need to stop the stupidity.

Great day to work in the gardens. Have a good day, all.

Thanks for the muppet moments Opa, RaZ and BYFM! I needed that laugh!

greenmimama - I had 2-5 hens at a time over the years and rarely were they all laying every day.Their bodies need a break from laying sometimes and they might react to the move, a change in feed, stress, cold or shortening days. The large egg producers keep the chickens indoors, give them the same number of hours of light a day all year around and keep the temperature the same all the year.
I don't think they keep the hens very long either as hens lay less eggs as they age.

Bottom line is that backyard chicken farmers MAY NOT (I don't have statistics) get as many eggs per chicken per day as an egg farm but the quality is so much better!

I've been keeping stats on mine since December of last year. At first it was for my Bio-Stats class, now it is just fun to see how things are going.
I can tell you the mean, mode, median, standard deviation, number per day, weight of each egg, etc.
Does that make me a chicken nerd?
