Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Has it been a few weeks? Now that I only visit so often I forget...Is Mom still with this? Hope Clover is doing good. I'll have a new bunch of FGs and cross FGs/NZs by October. The FGs make nice pets. My new goat is getting the royal treatment as I am building her a 56x48 foot fenced area with a modified a-frame home big enough for 3-4 100 pound goats. I just got back from Laura's (Hillbilly Hen) with an Olive Egger and 2 Black Copper Marans. They went right in with my BRs and NHs with NO issues. So since I never read more than the last page I'll miss any of the chatter. As always, if you need to tell me ,either PM or email me at [email protected]

peace all

And Opa, do you know what this is? Maybe a rainbow trout or a splake? I have not seen a black-mouthed fish before.

It's a small chinook salmon. They have black mouths and black gum. If it was a coho it would have a black mouth with white gums. A steelhead would have a white mouth with white gums. Also the anal fins on salmon have 13-19 rays on trout there are 8-12 rays..

hi John-

im here. Been extremely busy. Clover is doing well- big, gets out of every pen I put her in, she has a little territorial "witch" attitude when i reach in her space, and she strikes with her front legs. However, once I am not in her space, she is friendly and calm.

I hope everyone is doing well- I only have a moment here and there of time lately to check online and peek in here at everyone.

It will slow down soon- but right now its crazy.

Our second egg today! Soon, we'll be at about $100/egg for our return on investment.

Nova - I'm sorry you found Roger like that but at the same time, now you know for sure. I always worked myself up with the not knowing.
Now when you say streamers are you talking about the way the feathers on his head look all mad scientist like? I have 2 silkies that I'm unsure about so that would help in figuring if they are girl or boy.

Girl with no streamers.

Hello fellow Michiganders, Does anyone know if there are any Salmon Faverolle breeders in Michigan? I curently have a small flock and I am looking to expand Thanks
Star Bright Farms has wonderful bantams. add a .net for the website.

My birds were all out this morning and I took them out some tomatoes to eat about 9:30. I tossed them on the ground and everyone came running. They had just started eating and all the girls took off to hide under the camper. The boys all stayed eye to the sky. I'm turning in circles trying to see anything out of the ordinary. I can't see anything until a hawk swoops over the house and comes diving in right to were I am with the roosters. So I yelled and waved and yelled some more until it flew off. The weird thing was the roosters never said a thing, no alarms nothing the hens just ran. Usually anything in the air sets off the roosters, geese, crows, low flying planes, but today not a thing. I'm just glad I went out to feed them when I did.

Darn chicken story...

Yesterday I was out with the chickens a lot. Every time I turned around the alarm would sound, every fluffy butt scattered to cover. My garage floor, which I just cleaned is now covered in chicken treats. Well, the dogs think they are... I always have clean shoes... ANYWAY, back on track. Not that I will stay there, but! So, I decided last night that I would actually use my run. I don't normally use it... I got up this morning, let the birds out of the coops, but locked them in the run. Oh how very trusting I am. I went to drop my boy off at school, and then went to work.

When I got home, I was just a teeny tiny bit bummed to not have my usual mooching greeters. I got out of my trusty rusty, door falling off, but it has a new floor, jeep, and I hear it.. That unmistakable sound that only chicken people understand. Wings flapping, feet pounding, it's a chicken stampede!

I have 34 birds right now... Only 14 of those birds were where I left them this morning. Four....teen.... What the heck is the point of a run to keep the little feather brained morons safe if they are just going to fly over? AND NO! I will not clip wings. They need those wings to escape daytime predators that are on the ground.

Needless to say, I see no point in locking them up in the run while I am at work until I can roof it. I think I will start with the poles this weekend.

ALSO! As I was doing coop inspections, by this I mean checking the ground around the base of the coop for disturbances of ground, I found a lovely chicken hole. Now, that would not normally be a problem since their best dust baths happen under the 4x8. NO, this one was next to the base of the summer coop frame. How do they expect me to keep them safe if they are going to dig a hole to bathe in so close to the walls? I swear they are trying to tunnel out. Man... I tell ya...

Oh, and found this while amusing myself on the internet. These birds do not cross the road... They wait for the bus...

I should add to my own post that it's not purely cost because, as we all know, chickens aren't necessarily cost effective, but the cost of healthy, humanely raised food... which I think we could agree is the reason behind our passion (if they are not pets). Ugh, this is why I haven't drafted a letter to them yet. Every time I write something down, I realize I've said it wrong or left out major points.

I need to sit down one evening and seriously pour my heart into something because the technical/legal stuff is too much for my right-brainedness. There is little room for an introverted artist in politics.
Why not? That's pretty much me in a nutshell. I don't normally speak up, especially without carefully drafting first, but this issue has got me mad! It is not only going to affect my friends (you guys) but it is going to affect my potential food suppliers! And limit me pretty severely when i go house hunting in a year or so. :(
I can't see anything until a hawk swoops over the house and comes diving in right to were I am with the roosters. So I yelled and waved and yelled some more until it flew off.
Whew! good job!
