Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I found this article

This is a new article and they either have no idea about the proposed changes or they are able to work around them because they want to change the urban areas where they would be building the farms/gardens to ag zones...

Or maybe they are trying to pull attention away from the proposed changes...
Everyone in Detroit currently has the same protection that the rest of the state has. They realize that they can't get money from the people so they want their own set of rules. That is part of then reason that the 2012 preamble to the GAAMPs includes wording that applies to population over 100,000.

I candled my CL eggs that have been under my little frizzle cochin for two weeks. Looks like they are all developing, although it was hard to tell if I got a look at them all as every time I finished with one and put it down next to her she would immediately tuck it back in, which I did not notice at first - I may have looked at some of then twice. Watching a black bird in the dark is a little tricky!

Have the reporter contact me.
I will go and dig up the link he provided on the news feed for giving him stories, he is the one who covered the state auctioning our state land's mineral rights as well!

ha ha, i got this mental image of you all serious and dilligently working with your flashlight, and the hen just as serious and dilligently putting them all away! Probably thinking "silly human", lol.

Now I'm really worried about all this GAAMPS stuff >< If this passes, I could lose my chickens before I even get to purchase them. Raz if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know!

Don't worry, get active.

Write a letter to MDARD and express your concerns. Let them know how you will be affected. Ask that they table the changes until a task force that includes small scale keepers can be convened to protect the rights of all of us.

The website for contact info is:

I did send a letter at your earlier urging. Should I send another? I just read the link that was posted for the proposed changes and I do not like that these will allow local government to dictate how I can provide for my family.

If I have adequate housing for my private livestock, care for them daily, keep them in good health, and do my best to keep their noise level down, then I am ahead of many dog owners who let their animals **** all over their yards so their neighbors can enjoy the odor and bark ceaselessly at me through the fence while I work in my garden.

Is it just me or could some of this wording also allow local government to deny me my home vegetable garden? Could a greenhouse be considered a farm building? Or am I wrong thinking that a farm isn't defined by the presence of farm animals, but by the purpose that the land is used for by its owner.

Ms. Patrick sent an e-mail to several of us who attended the Ag meeting yesterday. She is looking at having a meeting next week to discuss our issues and perhaps plan a course of action. She has invited a few other MDA people with urban planning and veterinary background.

I will attend for sure as I volunteered to join the task force if it comes about. It looks like we are getting through to the proper authorities in this game of chicken.

THANK YOU to everyone working on this and to all those who have sent letters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Digital event timers have actually came down quite alot in the last couple of years. A single outlet timer for indoor use can be had for less than $15 and a dual outlet outdoor use timer for less than $30. I have several and that I bought at Home Depot.
Thanks for the advice on where to look. I'm going to have to make a trip there soon.

I just wrote Linda Lee from WYCD to see if she could get some media on the subject. My MIL is related to her by marriage... we will see...
I don't know why I didn't think of that sooner.
