She is looking at having a meeting next week to discuss our issues and perhaps plan a course of action. She has invited a few other MDA people with urban planning and veterinary background. I will attend for sure as I volunteered to join the task force if it comes about. It looks like we are getting through to the proper authorities in this game of chicken. ;)
I will go if I do not have double shifts on that day. What day is the meeting????
Where the heck is that??? For the MI peeps, here is the link i found last month outlining the requests put forth the the state representatives . Now in the beginning "background" section all seems well, seems like they actually like ag! Get down to the "issues" paragraph and you see where they are firmly shutting the door on the little guys http://www.planningmi.org/downloads/rtfa_board_adopted_policy_feb_19_2010.pdf If you read through the changes they are now voting on, they have adopted each and every one into the new wording. :( I really think if we could get this to the news, it could make a difference. There are so many types of farmers affected, all of the ones i talked to hadn't even heard of it and were skeptical!!! I wanted to contact channel 17, but i got derailed because i couldn't find a map showing where the "zoned ag" land was, they have a 3 tier system where you are either zone 1, 2, or 3??? I thought you either were or weren't? I didn't want to look like a dummy so i didn't say anything for fear of them not taking it serious. Did you get your map done Raz? This stuff is scary, considering that most of the farmers producing meat in MI are probably considered "small scale". Where are we supposed to buy our meat? Is there not going to be fresh and affordable? This at a time when our state is at an economic slump. The odd thing is , they are really promoting dairy right now, and this has the possibility to affect small dairy operations too! I do have the name of a reporter who regularly covers environmental and agricultural stories, if anyone is braver or better informed than me!
It will affect me a lot too! Since I have a cow, and am wanting to expand to a few more dairy cows and raise some beef cattle, and will not able to keep any livestock if that law changes!

do you have a picture of her? She should start laying at around 7 to 8 months. I have had them start laying at even around 9 months.
I can get a picture of her... Maybe she is a flighty little thing! LOL
So sorry for your troubles! I have found Hot and Sour Soup blasts your sinuses clear like nothing else.

Yes, she is a diligent little hen, and pretty quick with the eggs too. I have been taking her out into the pen daily, as she was locked tight to the nest from the moment the eggs magically appeared under her. She runs around, eats some scratch, drinks and poops, jumps on the stump to flap her wings - squawking and complaining the whole time. Then an irresistable force takes hold of her and back on the egg she goes.

She kinda looks like she is willing to give you special kisses if you mess with her

The hot sour soup is AWESOME! I used to get it a lot when China Inn was just down the road...

In the past week I have had two tarps shredded that I had up as wind blocks. One over a section of run and one on the south side. Usually our winds are from the south and west but this last round of storms with north and east winds have been a pain. I'm thinking I need to find some hay bales and build a wall.

Actually, that is a REALLY good idea. The hay bales block everything from wind to snow and also act as a sort of insulating wall where chickens will be protected on the other side.

to all of you protecting chicken keeping. I have heard nothing about it up here.

There is a current case up there but I can't think of the fellow's name off the top of my head. I think the trial starts next week. I will check my files.

Bale walls are great for wind blocks. Since my coop door is open all the time, I use the hay bales to keep the wind from blowing directly into the coop. The chickens don't mind walking through the tunnel to get in and out.

Now that Halloween is over, I'll scrounge the neighborhood for thrown out bales, corn stalks and pumpkins.

What are satin balls pray tell?

Satin Balls

 • 10 lbs. ground beef
 • 16-oz. box of Total cereal
 • 16-oz. box oatmeal
 • Jar of wheat germ
 • 1 1/4 cup Vegetable oil
 • 1 1/4 cup Unsulfured molasses
 • 10 eggs (with shells)
 • 10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
 • Pinch of salt
 • Large bowl
 • Large cookie sheet
 • 10 qt.-sized freezer bags
Mix together and form ball according to dogs size. Freeze.

I would not recommend these as an only food source, but more like a supplement or aid to put on some extra weight. Or an occasional treat (in this case I'd make very small balls).

Cute costumes/kids :)

Don't worry, get active.

Write a letter to MDARD and express your concerns. Let them know how you will be affected. Ask that they table the changes until a task force that includes small scale keepers can be convened to protect the rights of all of us.

The website for contact info is:

I just emailed a letter too, thanks for providing all the info, so silly to me when the gov't wants to take over everything, just leave us alone.

I was crawling around in a hay fort with my kids at a fall party, wow, it reminded me of going up in my grandpa's barn hay loft, I loved it up there, always felt so small and quiet. A hay wall would be perfect.
