Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Speedy, one of our more friendly barn cats holding her own against a foraging chicken (Sandy). Brave thing. They don't usually clash but now and again a chicken will nip at a curious cat, who will tear off in fear and/or pain. The cats have a healthy respect for the birds, for sure.

Just pulled these out of the oven. Homemade bagels, Levy's recipe. It took me four tries to get the recipe the way I wanted it, which is no small feat considering it takes two days to make them. But finally figured out the malt powder, the oven temp and time vs. the recipe's recommendations. They're better than bakery bagels, hands down.

Careful using a light in the coop. Who was it that burned down their entire coop, birds and all, with a light that the chickens knocked down? Someone on the forum. I'm sure I read it on BYC. Horror story. I don't think I could put a light in my coop (save for the built in socket on the ceiling) sturdy enough to allow me to sleep at night.

What a cold night! Came home from work at 10:30 to see that the chick coop was down to 30deg, so I found another light and stuck it out there for them. Their waterer was frozen, but after I put the light in, it had warmed up to almost 42 by 1130. I'm going to pull the extra light out after I get the boy on the bus and check to see if their waterer is useable now. Need to figure out how to keep a little more heat in there I think. Even the big girls didn't come out much yesterday.

I'm a little sad that it snowed last night. I was really hoping it would hold off until Wednesday night so the deer would be easier to see on Thursday morning. I'm really excited to get to do a little bit of hunting this year! The only down-side is that I have to stay at my parents' house for 2 or 3 nights since my mother is watching the baby for me, and I'll have to be on the road no later than 430 each morning. Baby doesn't sleep well a night still. I might see if my mother has one of those little battery-operated travel alarm clocks and take it with me, set to go off every 30min or so to be sure I don't fall asleep.

We have some good bucks for the area we hunt on camera this year, and putting meat in the freezer will really help the grocery bill this winter. I have a doe tag too, and there's a doe without fawns (either ran them off already, or they didn't make it) that's pretty big that would also do nicely.

Good luck Gladahmae! ( I was hoping for snow on Thursday too, at least it isn't going to be pouring down rain!)

Aye, why get a mini zebu for milk when you can get a pair of goats for a lot less? My goats (with the exception of the newest who has not yet figured out I am the giver of treats and affection) act just like dogs with hooves!

Those look yummy!

I could have had a disaster in my coop once, the heat lamp was plenty secure, but the glass of the bulb broke at the base, But it stayed lit, Luckily I had the grate for the light in place so it held the bulb and kept it from falling on the birds or on the straw... I surely would have had a fire. So, I will NEVER put a light in my coop. All my birds have survived the last 2 winters just fine without it!

no doubt, I could get yak for the same price, and there is a ton more meat and they wouldn't require shelter like the zebu wound need. but... the zebu are aweful cute... and I do want a mini cow.

Anyone, What is this chicklet ? I think it's about 6 wks old. got the egg from RBAHMER. Has five toes and feathers on shanks. Take a guess. I can't find one like it in "breeds". Thanks. Bob

ladyrsanti- would you be willing to share you bagel recipe??? I have always wanted to try making them :)
I too would be careful with the lights. I know that we don't like to think of our birds getting chilled but I am sure that they are doing ok. I also have horses and don't bother to blanket them unless we get a really nasty storm. Maybe I am just mean though

Those bagels look delicious.

I had my job interview today. Not sure how it went but it's odd when the chickens come up in the interview! The job is a youth librarian and I mentioned instead of Paws for Reading I would want to start Beaks for Books which led to chicken talk.

Thankfully the snow has all melted! Everything was white this morning. Now the sun is out and nice blue sky.

Stacykins - how different does goat milk taste from cow's?
