Oh Briana, I know that feeling oh so well. But things might be looking up? Friend of mine, their power went off at 6am this morning, I called DTE and got the auto recording and reported it. Their power was back on just before noon. So maybe they'll get out to you soon? Keeping fingers crossed for ya.

I finally about 5 yrs ago, paid an electrician to come out here and wire my electrial box. Was only $150 and the best choice I ever made. Now the power goes off, I pull the main on the house, plug the generator to the pigtail plug out on my sidewalk, fill the generator up with gas and oil, start'er up and bingo. Whole house is running. (except note: do not start elec dryer, you'll see fireworks LOL) Told crazy chicken fever that will be my gift to them, when they get a generator.

Ok Im off to the bone crusher, fell way to many times today outside on the ice today. My hip and left leg are screaming at me. Hope he can pull me back into a straight piece again? The trials of snow/ice lol Winter is here and Im a clutz!!!

Yes, the wind is really howling. Lots of tree branches coming down, I am fearing we will lose power too. Chickens were quite ruffled up when they were making there way into the coop, but they look so cozy and happy when they get inside and start making their soft clucking noises, and getting up into their roosts for the night. We are starting to get many eggs now from our summer chicks - now averaging 7 a day. I don't think the Welsummers are laying yet - are they notorious for being late bloomers?

I just have to say how much I love my DH!

Today I had to go out and take down a very large piece of canvas that I had put over my chicken run [due to the heavy wet snow]. What would have taken me a couple of hours to do plus me climbing on a ladder [not a good thing] my DH just did in about 15 minutes. I didn't ask for his help because I knew that he wanted to get the plow on the truck and start plowing. But he just jumped right in and got it done in no time. I am so lucky to have him. He said that he did it because he didn't want me to fall off the ladder, because if i did then he would have to take care of the chickens.

Laura, it's nice to ready about someone who is appreciative of their other. It doesn't matter how hard, how bloody, or how dirty a job is if Hope is home she's helping. A task shared makes life fuller.

Good Morning! It sure does look nasty out there and cold! Boy, when winter decided to come....it came in like a lion!! This past year's weather has been one filled with extremes, that's for sure. Stay warm, friends and don't fall on you bum! Looks like everyone went back to bed, Opa!

THE SNOW IS HERE:weee:weee

Ok, I'm about to take the plunge. Every morning, my little boy lets the chickens out when he takes the dog out for her morning business. This morning, I told him not to let the chickens out. My husband was a dear and collected two duck eggs out of the duckhouse for me so that they would not freeze and explode before I could get out there. I have a feeling htere's probably a third buried in the straw in the run. Yesterday, I had to dig around to find two of them that were buried. I separated the drakes yesterday and put them in a stall in the barn because they are not allowed to eat today. They are going to the processor tomorrow. So I've been avoiding two things this morning. 1) The cold. 2) going out to check on those drakes and have them quack and look up at me begging for treats.

The time has come. Gotta do it. Here goes. Yup....I'm moving, really I am. Off I go. Boy, that little woodburning stove works well.

No snow but really cold and blowing still. Anyboby out there with Seramas wanna tell me how they will do in this cold. Making runs out to coop every hour or two to put thawed water out. They are in a sheltered area so not very windy but no electric in Serama coop, so no light to keep it warm. Big coop I had to break down and put 125 watt heat lamp in. Regular light bulb not keeping water thawed. Anyways I do have a huge brooder in the house that the Seramas can go in if it is too cold for them. Advice please.

Whew! Made it back in with all my fingers and toes intact. The critter water heaters seem to be working just fine, so that's good. The chickens were all waiting at the door wanting out. Not today. My poor little Fricken doesn't do well when they have to be locked up. He was looking kind of beat up when I went out. He was trying to hide in a nest box, behind a hen who was trying to lay. He had knocked the straw out of a couple of boxes, and he had another box full of poop. I picked him up and tossed him in the sheep stall. This is going to be an interesting Winter with him. He drives me crazy because he won't stay out of the nest boxes. I have to clean them out and refill them with clean straw almost every day. I can't keep him with the sheep for too long, though, because they won't let him eat. They immediately consume whatever food I put out there, whether it's all stock, treats, chicken scratch, chicken grain....doesn't matter to them. If it's food, they eat it. My routine is to distract them with grain in their stall and then I go out with some scratch for the chickens. Poor Fricken. He's such a little weanie. He'll never get anything to eat with the sheep around, so I'll have to put him back in the coop I guess.
