Sarah I am so sorry. I lost my Dad of cancer 4 years ago. Once they told him he was gone in 8 days. I think even though we didn't really have time to ready ourselves for it, I think it was better that way for him. My best wishes go out to Amy, her children, and all of your family.

I am going crazy! I have new chicks, two hatched this morning and I snatched them out of the incubator once they were dry to put with my wonderful little QUIET Polish baby. Single quiet baby. Sounds like an oxymoron.
However, the new chick wont shut up. One of the new ones does nothing but cry. It thinks the Polish is its mother- and the Polish wants nothing to do with it- so he runs away. The baby cries and cries and cries like a single chick would/should. The other one is a stripey baby and is very quiet. What the heck? Something must be wrong with the new one. Why wont it be quiet? It is warm, it has a sibling, it has stuffed clutchmates (i bought three yellow 'chicks' from CVS that peep when you hold them in your hand) and it has the wonder-mirror. Nooooooooooo- it wont stop peeping. Also, my Polish baby says, "if you dont stop crying, Im going to give you something to cry about" and runs over top of it.
The four Giants are doing great. They are growing fast. However, I think I have three roos and one pullet. Three have tail feathers coming in, same three have their 'shoulder' feathers coming in *what are those feathers called?* The other one does not, just wing feathers. The three may have larger baby combs- or I am imagining it. I put my hand in the cage, and the three rush forward, the one without tail feathers holds back.

Sevenchickens and I have been on a mission trying to find muscovies. Now that they are making them illegal to own after March 31st most everyone has either pulled their stock, or doesnt have any available eggs/ducklings.

I even emailed Miss Jayne to see if she had any.

Hope you are all having a good night. I have a chiropractor appointment in the morning. Hopefully they can fix some of the hurting I am feeling.

I am home and catching up on some laundry before the busy day tomorrow of going to the hospital and helping with the kids again. Jim is trying to get Amy home. We will know more when he meets with the cancer doctors at noon.

Well, I have learned here anyhow- in clutches past and in this one, the loud baby usually has something wrong with it. It didnt die, but it is heading there this morning. Not crying anymore- but not moving either.

I have ONE silkie that hatched overnight- only had two silkie eggs and the other doesnt seem to be doing anything.

its a girl.

and another stripey chick.

Looks like I am not going to have much luck finding any 'scovy babies or eggs before the deadline.

Well it's 16 degrees but it appears that it's going to be an awesome day. Having the sun shining bright sure makes facing the day much easier. I need to try and figure out just how I'm going to build some new pens. I'm thinking of a roofed 8x8 pen divided down the middle that I can use for a breeding pen.

i was in home depot thursday to get a 50 gallon tote for a brooder
then i got the idea to build one but i hadnt drawn up any plans so i didnt get enough material
so thats my project for today.
since the weathers cold how long would you suggest keeping the chicks inside?

You will want to start out at 90 degrees and reduce the temperature by 5 degrees each week. You wouldn't want to put them outside until they are completely feathered which will take about 6 weeks. By then the outside temperature and the brooder temperature should be close to matching. Regardless of how well featherd they are you shouldn't place them with your adult birds. I would wait until they are about 16 weeks before trying to intergrate with your adult flock.

I will be going to Menards and Tractor Supply today to get the materials to build our hoophouse run and to refurbish the old shed into a new and bigger coop for the gang! DH said the other day that the chickens have been good for me! I have to admit that DH has been good for me!
