I've found people are willing to help when you tell them they get to keep the eggs and throw a little cash their way. I really think it is the eggs that win them over though.

I had a Muscovy hatch today? It's day 30?

I've been working towards getting my birds to the point that they only require a little time every few days. Two of my runs have 50# range feeders that will supply feed for over a week before refilling. I'm hoping to run water to a yard hydrant some time this summer. Once that is accomplished I will install autofill water systems on all runs and cages. Of course this will only work for summer but it will eliminate some of the drudgery of chickens.

If we're just going overnight, we just stock up on feed/water and don't worry about it. If we're going for a few days, our neighbor keeps an eye on them and feeds and waters as necessary. I also farm sit for them when they go out of town.

From everything I read they could go either way.

With the 1 1/2 as the roost they must grasp it to stay on then there is constant jostling. With it at the wide width it will allow them to settle down on the feet and actually relax. That will also allow them stay much warmer in winter.

I couldn't agree with you more Opa, I wish it could be something all young people have to go through, even if they don't hunt.

SweeChee, nice coop!

Dear hubby even went out at 2:30 am just to check on the chicks so I didn't have too. I was so nice to have the sun in my face to wake me up this morning

Off to get ready for a town run. Enjoy your day, it is suppose to be a hot one compared to yesterday!

I asked yesterday, but I will ask again: Does anyone have or know of anyone that has buff colombian cochins? My friend is looking for some hens.

I have a family member come over. I have 4 dogs that have to be fed 2 times a day and the kennel open and closed for the day.
So they just check the chickens at the same time. I'm going to be getting large feeders so they don't have to be fed everyday. And hoping to come up with an auto door opener/closer too... although I don't know if I trust those yet. Plus I hope to get Yak calves from YakLady next summer so they'll need care as well.

Yes they could go either way, but in a colder climate, wide side up is better so the feet are more covered by the body/feathers while roosting; it's to reduce the chance of frost bite (which is also induced by too much moisture in the coop).
