It was a beautiful day here. Still taking forever to melt that snow, but it's working on it. The weather says it's not going to get below freezing tonight so hopefully the snow will continue melting even overnight.

I need to get the geese penned for mating but at this point all the extra pens that are not in use are buried in 4-5 foot drifts.

Got chicks hatching in the bator as I type. So far none look to be the beta roo's offspring, but only a few are out so far so I'm still hoping we'll get at least a few from him.

Spent a lot of time outside today...just came in to eat and heading back out! WOOOHOO for 45* weather!

Did everyone enjoy today?
I went to TSC and bought stall dry and pine shavings- cleaned my coop OUT! (I sure did miss my hen Carmen while I did it- she used to always get in the way of the rake and tell me off the whole time. Sad to have lost that personality!).

I put down new shavings, new alfalfa hay for the nest, and mixed stall dry in there- poured two bags of shavings out in the mud path that everything uses. Nice clean and dry. Hopefully the shavings will soak up some of the water from the melting snow and make for a cleaner yard.

it was NICE out today. The ducks had a party. The pigeon is trying to pair up with one of the hens. Poor guy. (The pigeon that Vicki got for me at Chicken Stock left him for one of the wild boys).

And the sparrows were twitter-pating in the bushes. I wish I wish I wish that Winter was on its way out. I know that we will get more cold and more snow, but I really wish we werent.

I work the rest of the week, so I will only get to enjoy the evening side of the nice days coming. I hope you all have a fabulous week, and a wonderful Valentines Day.

Hello all another Michigander here!! Oliver Hill sent me to this thread, didn't know there was a Michigander thread, I'm Missy from Cedar Springs and I have 11 ducks, 2 adults and 9 ducklings(4mths old) that I've had indoors since end of October when they hatched and just today put them outside with this so called warm up to get them use to being outdoors. They are Rouen/Runner mix, here is my flock of babies and mom and dad.

October babies~ 7 females, 2 drakes

And here is Momma and Dad, Momma is a special needs girl, she was born with a birth defect with one leg up. My son found her thinking she was hurt last March and the feed store gave her to him free, then the next day I got her a partner knowing NOTHING about ducks, and well soon found out that I had opposite sexs and got very beautiful babies from them.

Momma Oreo ( Do you think she is a Rouen or Domestic Mallard?

Most hatcheries (which is where feed stores get their birds) have "Rouens". Because real Rouens lay very sporadically however, they don't breed to standard -- real Rouens are BIG bodied ducks -- instead they select for egg laying ability because you can't sell ducklings if you don't have any eggs to hatch to begin with. And because egg laying ability often comes along with a thin build what you end up with is a duck the is bred as a "Rouen" but more resembles a mallard in type and size. Clear as mud?

I'm not a big fan of runners but I find Ming-Ming striking! Welcome to the MI thread.
