Good Morning Michigan!

Another beautiful day...DH and I are going fishing!! It is so nice out it will be great even if we don't catch fish!

M.Sue...your coop is fantastic!!

Like the insulating idea of using straw or hay bales.....some of the neighbors around here have used them that way.
I cleaned out the coop, sprayed with pyrethium and hauled fresh dirt into the run area....my flock is ready. I have no insulation in my coop but with English Orps and Jersey Giants...they can take the cold ok.

fifelakelooper.....Thank you, I love my coop. Thinking about it calling it the Shabby Shack & making a sign!! Can you tell me what is pyrethium? Is it a sanitizer of some sort? I plan on cleaning mine out while the weather is nice.

I think I have it spelled wrong...but you find it in Tractor supply. It kills mites and bugs and can actually be used ON the chickens although I haven't tried that. I spray the coop inside when I clean it. It is "organic" so not as good as killer as Sevin...put I feel more comfortable using it.

I'll have to check & see if one of the TSCs near me carries it. Sevin works wonders but I'm like you and a lot of others.....just don't feel real comfortable using it.

M.Sue - nice coop!!

RaZ..... I would love too see the look on her face if you shattered her little world and told her ALL chicken eggs, come from a "dirty" chicken butt. Wow, must be nice going through life so ignorant.

Bullet, Welcome.... sorry I can't help with the BR eggs.

The weather is going to be so nice this weekend. I guess this is probably our indian summer before winter... I'll take it!

Sunday we're taking a road trip up north a bit to pick up a pair of lionhead rabbits.

I think that is Hawaii (or maybe Oz)

Strong-tasting foods like garlic, cloves, onions, asparagus, and broccoli can cause the eggs to have an off taste - not a problem if they are not laying yet though.

Hi bullet, and welcome to the Michigan thread - sorry no BR's here

I need to downsize my flock a bit, so my loss is your gain! I am offering two pairs of started Araucana chickens, approximately 12 weeks old and hatched right here with my flock. A pair means you are getting a pullet and a cockerel. These are actual Araucanas, not Easter Eggers or Ameraucanas. An article (posted below) from the Araucana club of America can give you a clear definition of what these birds are like.

Pair #1 is composed of a black cleanfaced, rumpless cockerel paired with a tailed, tufted blue pullet.

Pair #2 is composed of a black tufted and rumpless cockerel and a tailed, cleanfaced pullet.

I cannot change the pairings, since the pairings are the BEST combination to give you a boost in breeding for the best Araucanas! The rumpless and tufted gene are both dominant genes, so those specific pairings will give you chicks that meet breed standard!

Did I mention they are free to BYCers? I would rather give them away to a BYCer who will appreciate the breed then sell to a local (even though I do have them listed on craigslist).

you going Saturday or Sunday?? or both??

I'm just going Sat. in the morning. I need to be back home around 1:00...friends from out of town are coming over.

oh bummer, I can't go till the afternoon. A church family person needs help with an extra truck and trailer to help someone move big stuff, their truck is having "issues" and is out of commission. I was fearing I wouldn't be able to go to Birch Run at all cuz of this coming up but I think I can squeeze it in. My pastor is coming with me, she's so EGGcited about seeing tons of chickens.

Your chicken house is terrific by the way. Couldn't you stand bales up on the tall way around it, even if you had to tie them to keep them from tipping over?? ANyway your chicks can go under and scratch and peck, they'd sure love the shady cool in the summer months?? I have overturned a couple small swimming pools and raised them up on cinder blocks, my chick sleep under them alot.

Here is a pic of the stuff. I use it too. I mix some up in a plastic tub and dip the chickens in it I give them a good soak and make sure it gets under their wings and around their tail feathers. I then completely clean out the coops and mix this up in a sprayer and spray down the coops real well. Let dry and then put clean shavings and DE back in the coop. I try to get started on this in the morning so the chickens will have the day to get dry, not to mention it takes me all day to do this.
