I need more advice over these stupid ducks... I put up higher fence. Well guess what... The darn things are out again. This time they've gone far enough up the stream that I had to actually look on private property till I saw them. What do I do now? How do I keep them in the pen? I do not have enough money to build another high enclosure and fencing... As cute as they are I think I would rather not have them. And I even have a pool that I put fresh water in daily. I even put lettuces, peas, cucumbers etc. .. Into first thing in the morning. But it seems once thyve eaten all the goodies , they escape.

so... How do I keep them in?

did I mention that they climb too? Yeah caught them at it this morning before I put up the new fence...

Netting on top? I have a feeling that adding height will just make them need to fly a bit higher, which is no big deal for most fowl. But some netting on top, and they'll just boink into the barrier, and be contained.

What type of ducks? How high is your fence and what's the construction? Have you tried clipping wings?

Sad day.

After talking to our vet and educating myself on E. Coli respiratory infection, I agreed to have our chickens euthanized and cremated so that they would not be carriers of respiratory infection to wild birds and to other chicken flocks in our community.

Yes, the pneumonia/sinusitis could have been treated to extend their lives longer but my chickens would always be carriers and would most probably die from the pneumonia eventually.
No idea on how they got it. My d'uccle was the first to come down with it. She could have had it from the egg she hatched from or she could have aquired it from the wild birds, or on my boots after I visited the feed store. The new Isa Brown's I purchased had to be put down as well.

Our coop and run must be left empty over the winter with plenty of freezing and sunlight and even a good chlorine 'Chlorox' washdown.

Very sad but wanted to be responsible and do the right thing. I'll really miss my little Bobbi. Best chicken we ever had.

edit - The symptoms were sneezing then diarrhea. The vet could hear the pneumonia with the stethascope. When Amoxicillan did not clear the infection the vet suspected a stronger pathogen and E. Coli was what he found on culturing the sinus/throat. When he found something that would affect other birds in the community - we started to talk about what the right thing to do was. Not just for my flock but for other birds and chicken flocks.

Well-bred silikies have black skin, crosses and poorly bred birds do not necessarily follow suit.

Sorry about your son. Maybe the judge saw some potential and cracked down hard hoping it'd teach him a hard lesson and make sure he doesn't end up in the courtroom again. Doesn't make it any easier to swallow, but I could see that reasoning, perhaps?

The court will probably work out a payment plan with him on the fines, I got a MIP when I was young and I paid it in increments on my minimum wage job. If I remember correctly I was even late with a payment and just called and told them and they said as long as they can see and know there is an effort they don't worry about it. It's been some time now so things may have changed -- and of course this is a county court in a rural county, not a busier city one but... it's worth him asking about so you can focus your resources into your van/necessities and he can take care of his mess up on his own, in his own time.

ETA: The cockerel in the front of this photo is a Silkie Cross:
