chickflick, so sorry for your loss

Farmerboy, I totally agree with Olive about not keeping pigs thru the winter. We always got them in the spring and by the time fall rolled around we were ready to put them in the freezer. It was nice not having that extra chore to do in the winter not to mention buying the extra feed etc...

Hi all. Got to say I do Not love the new format - it is not very compatable with my android phone, which I use all the time at home since I don't have an internet hookup. I knew things were changing, but it seems strange to change to a format that does not work well with new technology.

Nova and chickflick, I am sorry about your hens. ( I would give you hugs but the smilies don't all show up anymore)

Its working now.

Thanks for all the info Olive. It is very helpful. I will just start with feeder pigs for a few years before keeping some year round, if we come to that point.

Does anyone raises or know someone who does have Milking Shorthorn cattle, for I really want a milking cow for the family. My dad was looking through a book that I got from the library, ''Family Cow''. Very good book, anyway based on what my dad read, he picked Milking Shorthorn for dual-purposes. Cows for milk, and bull calves for steers.

Milking Shorthorn is a very good choice for both milk and meat. Used to have some years ago.

Thanks guys, sure could use all the hugs. I've had Shirley for 5 yrs. She was a beautiful BA. Wasn't a easy thing to put her down. The hawk was still hanging around early evening. They will be in lock down for a few days.
This new BYC is interesting. Going to take awhile to get use to it.
Are you all ready for the snow that is forcasted? I'm not. Liked this mild weather.
Take care....

No way! But I think DH might have the plow fixed on the truck in time. We are supposed to have our Date on Friday, it's the 13th!

Sorry for the losses to hawks. I had one out in a tree watching twice today. I'm not sure what kind he was. 'Tis the hungry season I guess.

Spent the afternoon out tidying up the run, taking down all the netting and generally getting ready for snow. I put a washtub with sand, ashes and DE in the coop for them to enjoy, but everyone was scared of it and wouldn't go near it. Hopefully that will change.

I picked up a Organic book at the library. I would call it a Yuppie book

. Anyway in the section they have on keeping chickens they list 3 hybrid breeds I have never heard of. I think they are made up. Mrs. Pepperpot, superb layer of large to extra-large brown eggs, easy to handle. Black Rock, Steady layer and disease-resistant. Docile, but full of character. and Speckledy Hen, Easy to handle, Prolific egg layer of dark, chestnut-brown eggs. Has anyone ever heard of these?

I am wanting to try make pickled eggs with my button quail eggs. I wrote down a recipe from ChicwannaB. I can't find where to find members to PM so .... if you see this ChicwannaB, I want to know how you would seal the jars up so I can give them as gifts or to sell. Thanks
