I so do not know about chicken coloring. LOL. But then again, I am not breeding to get a certain color. I will worry about that later when I start breeding faverolles...

Ok, so I went and did my candling. Of the 7 eggs, 5 were developing. 2 had absolutely no development. Which I guess is good, cuz when I candled them, they looked pourous. They were the wyandottes eggs. SO, both of Buffy's eggs are growing well. Then the 2 cochins mutts and Asters eggs. The one egg of Buffys, is a little behind the other ones, but developing nicely. YEAH! I cracked open the other ones that were not doing anything to look, and doesn't even look like they were fertilized at all. Glad I didn't just leave it to nature! LOL. Those would have been some stinky eggs.

SO, as promised!! With out further ado...

Opa I just posted a public message on your profile

I have been trying to manipulate my photos, but can't drag and drop - apparently there is a glitch that they were working on as of Friday, haven't tried again as none of that works on my cell phone AT ALL. I will have a shot at it on my computer today.

Did I read earlier that some feed their birds fish? I have some fish trimmings from cleaning perch, and wondered if I could feed them to the girls. Worried about the bones mostly.

When I fillet fish I toss the carcass in the run and the girls attack it. Last year I even put a deer carcass in with them and they just about picked in clean.

fish bones sound like a good calcium source to me.

if you are worried about it run the trimmings through a food grinder first.

there is lots of healthy stuff in fish. I have thought about running my fish trimmings through a grinder and feeding them to the chickens, I usually go to lake michigan for salmon or lake erie for walleye so on a good trip I could have 10 pounds of carcasses.

Hope to get some help...One of my young BR hens 4 months old started wobbling on her feet. I put her in a quarrantine cage yesterday. This morning she seemed alert, however her legs were out sideways and she can't seem to stand. I scoured my books and such but can't seem to put a sickness with the this. If anyone has seen someting like this please PM me. Any help is appreciated.

John, I've never encountered your bird's problem but hopefully with as many folks as we have on this thread someone will come up with an answer.

Yesterday I was out shopping to get some 1 quart plastic freezer containers for my cages and ran across a dog toy with an elastic launcher. Since it was a chicken I decided that I needed to pick in up for the raffle table at our Chickenstock.

Bianca,
Your husband is a gifted builder!

There is a thread I have been following called 'The Woods-style house in the Winter'.On BYC under the Coops Section. It is an open air coop that has a big screened window on the side that is away from the wind and they leave it open all winter for ventilation.
Your husband might enjoy seeing that thread as he builds!

My coop is similar to yours and one challenge I had was the coop getting very hot in the Summer and steamy/ humid in the Winter. Then I had to keep the hens outside of it or they would overheat when they went in to lay.

So I wonder if your door is open on one side in the Summer, could you put a big screened window on the wall accross from the door so in the Summer when it is 100 degrees you can open that coop right up and the hens can go in and lay without dying.

Also in the Winter when the sun comes out, your coop will get very steamy with those skylights and hens. The ammonia in their feces is very damaging to their lungs and it would be great to have a predator proof screen door and a way for the air to move/flow/ cross breeze in there.

John, kinda sounds like Marek's disease, at least that is how Mareks starts. The Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow is a good resource to have; it has diagnostic info in the back and is usually available at TSC.

Thanks for the tips chicken grandma. He is still in the process of building, I know he has put in roof vents and is planning on putting 2 ft square vents on the east and west sides (pointy sides). On the east side the entire bottom 2 feet or so will hinge up for easy of cleaning and on really hot days I can hinge it open and leave the west door open for a good breeze also. Will post more pics and willingly accept all advice, thanks.
