With all the various maladies that can affect our flocks, the predators just waiting for an opportunity, now we have to worry that our coops might wind up in area 51.

Love your GIF's Opa! You always find something so cute that fits the post. I like this bigger size font.

Okay if I remember how to do this, this should show pictures of the coyote that I worked on. It came in with a snare around its neck. Someone set a snare trap in a children's playground in Allen Park. We had to guess on his weight, I had to manage to get in this cage and not get bit and poke him with anesthetic drug to knock him out, then removed the snare, clipped and cleaned the wound, sutured his lip where he tried to chew through the cable holding him, reverse the drug and put him back in the cage.
He was then released back to the wild...the stretch of wooded area by the big tire on I-94:

Makes me sick to see animals trapped. I have to stay off the Predator thread because I get myself in trouble over there. Thank God you were able to help this one Mom. Glad I wasn't following YOU into that cage!

Nope-
Just leave her alone. She will sit with the babies until she is convinced they are done hatching and ready to leave the nest and then she will get up and they will follow her. I have been worrying about my outside babies with Mama- but they are doing fine. Just fine. They are what? Five weeks old now. And Mom has done a fabulous job. I just keep my distance and watch her. It is so much fun. Mom has done a fantastic job keeping the other chickens away from the babies when they were tiny, but she doesnt charge the flock now, and they all intermingle. :)

Thanks for the advice Mom. I haven't even been out to the coop yet today. I leave the pop door open 24/7 so they have access to the run all the time. The run is tarped and I have a stack of hay bales infront of the pop door blocking any wind from blowing in. Mama is in her airline crate up on a bale of straw in the coop, so she's fine until I get out there. I need to put food and water in for her now since I won't be taking her out until she decides she's ready to move off the nest. I'm so excited to peek and see if anything is happening yet.

Snowing here as well. Nasty weather, even the barn cats didn’t want to come out. Horses couldn’t be convinced to venture out either.

Lost a purebred Black Copper Maran hen to being egg bound this morning.

Had been working on her since Sunday. Oh how I hate losing to mother nature. Anyways, that leaves one of my Black Copper Maran roos without his mate so I will put him up for sale. Thought I’d ask you guys first if you are interested. I bought him as a chick from the nice guy in Ada. He has feathering down his feet, good attitude and no white on the wings. Nice colors too. PM me if you are interested.

Hmmmm. I could kick myself for giving away all my French Black Copper roosters, but what was I going to do with EIGHT of them? I have two FBCM hens from Jerry in Ada and would love to breed them with a roo, but I have Joe (BR) and Worf (EE) who are really good roos and take good care of the girls. If I had another coop I'd take you up on your roo and keep the FBCMs separate from the others to get some nice chicks. I just need to come up with some place else to keep them. Oh well, timing isn't good now.

I have done Cocker Spaniel for 30 years. Am I crazy? Oh you bet I am. I'm sure the stupid person who THREW a little cocker spaniel out of the window of a moving car into my yard one time will back that up about me being crazy !!!! Especially after I chased them down. Was NOT a pretty scene. Dedicated and sincere ? Absolutely. Misuse an animal and I will hunt you down. After all, they didn't choose to be with you, we choose them !
God put these animals here for OUR benefit. He didn't put us here for theirs.

Well said! I did Doberman rescue for years and agree with you 100%.

Good morning everyone!

Boy, what a morning I had!
th.gif

As some of you know that I work at a dairy farm, and I have to get up at 4 am to be there at 5 am to milk the cows. Anyway I left at 4:40, and it was snowing so hard that I could not see around 40 to 50 feet in front of me. So I decided to take M-37 as a safer route than the back roads that I normally take. But M-37 was completely a whiteout. The fastest I drove was 35 MPH, and a few times I had to go 15 MPH.

I could barely see anything, and had to drive the middle of the roads in fear of going off into the ditch. My arms were sore from holding the wheel when I got to work 10 minutes late, and thanked God when I got there. I was driving an old 4x4 diesel truck, so I am sure that helped too. Boy, I sure hope that I do not have to that again. It was scary, but the snow was beautiful. I know, I am nuts

Farmerboy, so glad you are safe! One thing I don't miss since being retired is making the commute to downtown Detroit everyday, especially when the weather is like this.

would love to have been there to see that!! we have a cat that some one didn't want and threw in our yard as a kitten....I am sure she has a better life with us then those that threw her out.

If you crack the egg open and it has to much baby you might not want to eat just because it is a little gross, Don't think it will hurt though.....
So has any one ever made suet blocks out of venison fat? I am trying to render it now. (been waiting for me to get a round-to-it) ....Hope we don't get to much snow, DH had to bring our Kawasaki mule into the shop yesterday, wouldn't stay running and he couldn't find the problem.....no mule .....no plow
barnie.gif
hope they can fix it fast and it doesn't cost too much

Reminds me of Home Ec class (anyone old enough to remember that?) when I was in high school. We were making a cake and I cracked an egg in the bowl and out slid a perfectly formed little chicken embryo.

Were talking back in the dark ages. I don't remember anything but all the girls squealing and running like it was going to jump up and bite them. We were such sissys back then. Miss Tight Curly Perm grabbed the bowl and threw it in the trash.

Good afternoon fellow Michiganders, Michiganians, etc, etc!!! Oh look the sun just came out! WOOT! Dang the snow is blinding! Got another inch of snow overnight up here in northeast LP added to the 7 inches we got the other day and the 5 inches a few days before that. The pups have just moved from their respective snooze spots to lay in it, gives me a few more minutes to finish this post before the puppy demands another walk.

How is everyone? I've been AWOL since mid April of last year, just lost interest I guess, plus having acquired a new puppy the month before really took up a lot of time. I'm not even going to try reading the hundreds of posts here since my last visit. Just wanted to say hi to anyone who may vaguely remember me, hi to the newbies and those I haven't met. Hopefully, I'll be around more. Especially as I just ordered 25 new chicks!

And now the puppy is whining for attention so I must go. Later!

Hey swampducks - I don't remember you, but welcome back! No way you could ever catch up on all the posts you've missed so far, so just jump in and start here!

Just got in from being out to the coop. With the pen being wrapped in plastic this wind doesn't stop my chickens from being out in it. They were roosting all over and enjoying the sun when it pops through the clouds. Seeing it's so cold I decided to give them a warm treat. I gave them some old bread soaked in milk and warmed it.......they were fighting over the dish!

5 or 6 seems to be the magic number lately for eggs the past few days.....I'm not complaining!

Hi swamp ducks, nice to meet you
big_smile.png

Trying to read all the posts since last April would be like reading War and Peace, you would have to be retired with lots of time on your hands

There is NO WAY that I'd be able to read ALL the previous posts even if I was retired. This thread has too many characters & too much action to keep it all straight. Fastest moving novel I ever read!!

Rose, I bet it didn't take you long to walk that dog this morning.

Since I was thinking about dogs, I though 1muttsfann might appreciate this smilie.

Swampducks, glad to see you back.

Parakeet question -
I volunteer at a retirement center. They have a pair of parakeets in a rolling cage. The lobby was getting drafty so they put the parakeets in their small library which gets a lot of use.
I was concerned that the library wouldn't give the parakeets enough 'down time' 'resting time'.
What do you all think about the amount of love and attention that parkeets can tolerate? My concern is that these birds are being loved to death!

don't know much about parakeets but I am pretty sure to much draft is much worse then to much love. I have seen them in homes before and if they have a house or box or something they can go into if they chose that may help, also you can through a cover over them for part of the day. they are dark at night right? Birds in the wild are busy all day, I would think it would be OK
