So I have a bit of an oddball question.

If you have a bantam roo and it fertilizes a standard size hen egg will the offspring be bantam size, standard size or somewhere in between?

I'm asking because the coworker I gave my 2 bantam boys to has 2 chicks that have a ss wyandotte mama. We were just curious.
You'll probably get something in between.

HOPE THE B ATTLE IS OVER.

HOW DO I GO ABOUT GETTING SOME FERTILE EGGS ? AND NO, NOT FROM BUFFY, RaZ , I STILL THINK I KNOW HOW THAT GOES.

I'M NOT SURE YET WHICH VARIETIES/ BREEDS I WANT.
DO I NEED A [ OOH, HEAVENS ] BROODY HEN, FIRST ?
I DO WANT A HEN TO SET THE EGGS AND REAR THE YOUNG. (IS THAT THE CORRECT TERM USAGE ? set the eggs )

WOULD A NESTING / BROODING PEN ABOUT 50 FEET WEST OF THE MAIN ENCLOSURE BE SAFE FROM THE INFECTION TRANSMISSION ASPECT ? OR DOES ONE NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT DISEASE TRANSMISSION FROM EGGS, ASSUMING THE SOURCE IS DILIGENT IN CARE OF THEIR BIRDS?

WOULD ALL THE EGGS HAVE TO COME FROM ONE SOURCE ? OR IS IT OK TO GET SOME FROM ONE AND SOME FROM ANOTHER ? BIO SECURITY AGAIN.

thanks. It really bums me out, because I thought she was doing so well. I just candled my eggs in the incubator. Only two are fertile. One is suspicious. Out of 24, I think I only set a dozen, the others looked frozen/shook up.

My roo was standard, and my hens are bantam. So, we will watch RaZ chicks and my others to see what size they turn out. I guessed that some would be standard and some bantam sized...but somewhere in the middle seems to be a good answer too.

Yay! Congrats!

Good Morning all. Just time for a quick cup of coffee and then I'm heading for the Huron River at Flatrock. With as warm as it is and how warm is it supposed to be I've just got to try and connect with some more steelhead. Hope everyone has a great day and that you will keep your posts to a minimum so that I don't have a gazillion to try and read tonight.

Mom2, so sad

Nova congrats on your new chick, can't wait to see the rest as the hatch... have a great day off, I love days off

Today isn't one for me.Off to work in a bit.....Bobbry, like your new rooster but I don't think you will get many fertile eggs from him

Did you brake your broody? BO are good broodys and moms. I believe the mom setting on the eggs will introduce them to anything in the coop and there are not a lot of things that carry over in the egg. although there are some. I may be wrong as I have only used my own eggs to hatch, but I don't think you need to worry about bio sec. with eggs as long as you know they came from a healthy flock
Have a good day all

Morning Everyone.....
Weird weather....snowing & blowing yesterday and 50's expected today. I Took a trip north on 75 yesterday to go pick my mother up. Weather was great heading up but on the way back, within in only a couple of hours....snow, snow, snow. I don't mind driving in it but I hate driving through a section of the snow belt (West Branch - Grayling). Nasty driving, nastsy drivers who barrel past you & end up in median 10 miles a head (4 to be exact), and big semi trucks who pass you and leave nothing but a total white-out in front you. Really happy when I drove out of it!

Mom2.....Hugs...

Nova.....conrgrats on the hatchings!!

Last night I went into the coop to lock up & noticed fresh red blood droppings on the pine shavings below the roost. PANIC. I notice that it was one of the Isas that was bleeding. I bring her in the mudroom to examine her and noticed what looked like to be one of her toe nails that was bleeding. I rinsed her foot as best as I could and the applied some Blue Kote to it. She seemed totally fine and was enjoying all the special attention & treats. I don't know what she could of snagged it on, all the roosts are smooth, nothing sharp in the coop or pen that I know of. I was thinking that maybe it was a wound from fighting over roosting spots? That's my spot, no it's mine, move, I'm roosting there!! lol

Hope everyone has a great day......I have to work!
