And the hatchery packers couldnt tell?

OR...

the TSC people couldnt tell when they put them in the bins and labeled them RED PULLETS?

AND...

I couldnt check my box of chicks BEFORE getting home?

*sigh* *insert dejected smilie here* Of course I would buy cockerels out of a pullet bin. Of course.

Looks like my family is going to have some chicken in the freezer this Spring.
How old should my crowers in the back be before they go to Freezer camp? They hatched December 15th...not sure there is any meat on them..not sure on anything, actually.. lol.
Well, the chicks I got at TSC was labeled Black Jersey Giants and they are Barred Rocks !!!!! In with the Black Sex Links I bought is a chocolate brown chick. No idea. They need new help at the hatchery apparently.

Yes, spring has arrived. The sure sign here at Quagmire Acres is that I was driven inside by a cloud of mosquitoes. For real.

Please say it ain't so...I worked in the woods (mud) for a short time this morning, but didn't have any issues. Of course I was gone this afternoon, but I am definitely not looking forward to mosquito season..it is toooooo early!

Welcome Waggonerfam and Cattle Cait. Glad to have you guy. Everybody on here is great! Waggonerfam, I am up in Milan just a little north of you guys. We have good homeschool friends w/ 7 kids and chickens too. What breeds of chicks do they have down there at the Dundee TSC? They don't have squat up in Saline!

Henry: I'm the bigger goose! I'm the bigger goose!

Yorkchick: Yes, Henry. Except I'm the BIGGEST goose.

Henry: ::sigh::

Anyway, we have goose eggs!!!

Are you going to let them hatch some? Just a fuzzy couple?

Welcome to thewaggonerfamily and

I had no idea chickens could fly that high! Something must have spooked her or been after her. You're right, I'd like to see her get down.

Well, I made a list of places I had to stop today and took off with the dogs. First stop at Krogers, second stop at The Dollar Store, last stop at TSC. I also stopped at Mickey D's because I was starving and the dogs needed a treat. They get a plain hamburger patty split three ways cause they're all on diets. I get a crispy chicken snack wrap, small fries and a chocolate shake cause I'm the human. Finally made it to TSC and tried to avoid the you-know-what's. Got my layer crumbles and scratch, got some dried duck chews for the dogs, took my time looking around and then cautiously made my way over to peek into the bins. Red pullets, straight run black sex-links, straight run barred rocks, white pullets, and adorable assorted bantams, no ducks. Nothing even tempted me. So, as I'm driving home two and a half hours after stopping at Krogers I remember that I have ice cream in my groceries.

The phrase "dumb clucks" doesn't apply to my little flock. As I raked the yard, they followed closely and scooped up worms and bugs that I unearthed. Never once did they get in the way but they swooped in, grabbed a snack and backed off far enough for the next swipe.

Bella told me when the girls escaped from the run. She came to the back door and whined but never bothered any of the birds.

All 6 girls out free-ranging today.

And a photo for M2M. Lemon and Pepper out for a stroll.
