Prayers for Lucus, strength for family and wisdom for doctors.

Condolences for lost chicks.

Enjoying a little cooler weather today.

My DH had to rescue a Banty roo from a standard ee roo today. He got pretty bloody and tuckered out but should recover. The EE is in the sin bin. My plans to separate for spring have just been moved up on the to do list.

Prayers for little Lucas are being said.

Angela, I agree with others here that it was not the pine shavings. Something else was going on with them and it would behoove you to find out what caused their deaths so you can avoid it with others and/or stop the spread of some disease. Good luck.

A cool and cloudy day today but no rain here. The chickens were out all day again but I am beginning to worry about another fox attack. It was spring last year when I lost 8 of them to a fox trying to feed her babies. Since we have had such an early spring I assume the babies will be born earlier as well. Not sure when I need to start really being on alert or locking them up all together.

Joe and Worf had another sparring match today that ended in nothing, but they seem to be escalating. I know I'll never find anyone to take Joe with his aggressive tendancies and I don't know anyone around here who process chickens, so I'm considering bringing him to Chickenstock to sell to the Asian people. Just don't know if I can do it though. The sight of her walking around with six roosters hanging upside down from her hands is still with me from last year. I also have to find a home for my little BR rooster, Little Joe, so if anyone wants a handsome 9-week old, please let me know.

The two baby roosters had a crowing match today. One sounds like a baby doll that someone stepped on and the other sounds like he's saying "Mamaaaaa"!

Almost have my old coop back up to par and I'm getting a "new" coop tomorrow as long as the weather cooperates :) It needs some TLC but I'm going to section it off for breeding pens with seperate runs. I'll take pictures as we work on it!
I fired up the incubator today and also have eggs coming in the mail on monday! What does everyone use to clean thier bators out between hatches? I used bleach and antibacterial dish soap in hot water and then let it sit all day to dry.
Took some pictures of some of my showgirl chicks...

Also...I'm getting rid of my chicken tractors if anyone is interested! Here's my CL ad... http://lansing.craigslist.org/grd/2918532594.html
In usable shape, just need a touch-up here and there to make them perfect. :)

Think tip of the mitt - up by the bridge. I'm not sure what I'm doing with the showgirls yet, a lot depends on temperament. I got them to use as therapy birds or to go with me into schools, libraries. If I still have some I want to get rid of they will be coming to Chickenstock.

I agree on the pine shavings. My new babies with the broody mom started out day one on pine shaving and we haven't had problems. They are two weeks old now.

My son discovered the new chicks under the hen. He was mad I didn't take him with me to get them. I guess he told DH because he came in and asked "did you really get more chicks?" Funny thing is yesterday he called me from TSC and sent me pictures wanting to know if I wanted some but couldn't really say what they were. He was fine with it when he found out they weren't coming in the house.

Candled tonight. ...Started with 32...down to 11 after taking out yolkers and quitters......frustrating.....hope to get a few. Not to sure what I can do different..temp is at 99 humidity is at 45%... I'm using a LG with a auto turner and fan kit. A mixed bag from my hens and shipped eggs. Any suggestions?

Wow, what a surprise! It is very unusual to log on and find that I am only behind two posts. It seems I wasn't the only one to fall asleep early.
The coffee is on. Hot & robust if you'd like to sit and have a cup or two. While I can't offer you a donut, we've got chocolate cake. Actually that is better than donuts. You can cut a piece of cake any size you want and say I only had one piece of cake. While with donuts if you eat more than one you might gain weight.

In a few hours when the sun finally comes up I need to repair a waterer in my grow out chicken tractor. I had hoped to put the ISA brown chicks in there but with the lower predicted temperatures I think they are a little young to handle the cold. I'll keep them under a heat lamp until warmer temperatures return.

A lot of things can affect the hatchability of eggs. Are you sure that the eggs from your hens were fertile? How old were the eggs? Shipped eggs often have detached air cells. I wouldn't despair you probably didn't do anything wrong.

Oh that was disturbing to me, as well...I think I was traumatized.

Just want to say thank you to all for prayers, healing thoughts, and warrior songs for Lucas. Whatever form you use, I believe it all helps.
He is still sedated because there were more setbacks. He had to have CPR this morning and was put on a pacemaker so please keep him in your thoughts. Thanks.

continued prayers for this little guy...

Good Morning, Sam!

I was outside talking to my new neighbors yesterday..the people renting behind me. The girl/woman walked to the fence. The men stayed up by the house. My dog hates them..he usually calms down when I tell him its okay, or I start talking to people- because he really is a sweet big goof of a dog..not this time. He HATESSSSSSS the men behind me. I tend to trust my dog- so guess I will keep these guys in my radar. He wouldnt stop that low throaty growl and stare. She asked if she could pet him and for the first time in his life, I had to decline- because he wouldnt break focus on the men.
The girl/woman..says to me "Those are the cutest ducks I have ever seen..." heh heh..I couldnt help it. I said, "They are chickens." ...and she said, "OH, and those are her babies?"

Here's your sign~ Bill Engvall.....

So, to cover myself as usual, I let her know that most of them arent staying. They go to my brother in law, I told her...I let that one raise them to a certain size then off they go...
Mental list- get that **** privacy fence...make it most top priority.

My scary dog:
