I like chalk and a water paint brush. I used to use liquid watercolors, added an additive that made it more like oil, but obviously not... I can not remember what its called, but I am sure some one knows what I mean. I also like a oil crayons. They can be a bit of a pain in the butt though, but I like them.

I like doing bas relief carving and use oil paint to "wash" a hint of color into the wood. I was considering acrylic paint but after reading what has been posted I think I'll stick with oils.

Really nice Opa. Wood has such a lovely tactile thing about it that's lacking in painting. But then, I'm the touchy feely kind

WOW! I hope everyone has been taking advantage of this lovely day.

My head still hurts, but not enough to slow me down. I have decided that after I have a full tank in my propane, I am going to quit my 3rd shift job. I think that is the reason why my head never stops hurting these days. Simply over-tired and thats making me stressed. Also, the wood to enclose the winter run and make it a full out coop... and landscape timbers to make a walk way. I HATE HATE HATE the muddy path back to the coop. I have this pile of gravel in my driveway that I can put to good use. Oh yeah.

I was wondering if anyone has an idea/suggestion for a winter duck house? I want them to still be able to use the pool, but make it easier for me to not have an ice rink....

I was wondering if anyone has an idea/suggestion for a winter duck house? I want them to still be able to use the pool, but make it easier for me to not have an ice rink....

Not a duck person so I have no knowledge but couldn't you do something like a washtub with a heater that they use in horse trough?

I stayed busy today! My two projects of the day. Diaper bag for my SIL's shower and the beginnings of my chicken coop/tractor. Nails and wood hate me!! Even using my hubby's passload nailer I still couldn't get the nails to cooperate with me! Hubby was working on the garage and now and then I look up to see him just shaking his head. He did set up the chop box for me and show me how to toe nail a header. And..... somewhere my subtraction was off 4 inches.

The chickens won't mind they get an additional 4 inches of space.


I received an email today, the waiting list for eggs I have been on for a long time, for birds I have been trying to get for even longer, well I'm up on the list. Can I smuggle more eggs into the house and incubator? I think I will ask the hubby rather than just sneak, he does know how long I have been waiting. Egg math.

Opa, I would stick with oils for what you're doing, personally. I have used acrylic on wood by watering it down a bit, but otherwise I think acrylics would be too opaque for your work. Not that it would hurt to give it a try and see what you think, I would just make sure it is a scrap piece you don't care much about first.

So, I am feeling awful upset about the new chickens right now. The one's eye I posted about earlier is looking worse, so tomorrow I will be off to pick something up for it, but when I was getting them in tonight, I heard her sneeze, so I am not sure treating her eye will do a whole lot of good. I inspected each of them as I do every night while putting them away, and tonight two of them had a clear liquid running down their beaks from one nostril, and one of those also had an eye that was not looking too hot. Hard to explain what exactly was wrong with it, it wasn't pink, swollen, or bubbly, but not looking clear and bright. I expect it will look worse soon.

Thanking the stars that we have kept quarantine, hoping it is good enough. So far all of our "big girls" are fine. Can anyone tell me an approximation of how much doing a swab will run me?

Well it looks like a Little Boy Blue has finally figured out which end of the hen is used for what. Found a bullseye egg a few days ago, and today I saw him on his favorite hen. I do think, however, that I will be rehoming the 3 bantam lav ams this year. Looks like my bantam cochin hatch may be better than I expected, if so I will need all the room I have. So anyone interested, let me know. 2 hens and Roo, must go together.

Hi Juise,

I would ask Dr. Bader if he would do a swab test for you. I don't know what he would charge but I might guesstimate $100 all total. The vet has to swab the throat and then send the sample in a vial with medium to keep it growing to M.S.U. for diagnosis.
The swab test is more accurate than the blood test for MG.
While you are wating for the results, Dr. Bader could give you an antibiotic to treat respiratory infection. Our vet chose Amoxicillan.

It is possible that your big chickens are carriers of something and gave it to the little ones. It is also possible that the little ones when moved felt stressed and broke out with something that they picked up at Destiny Farms.
So sorry that happened. Please keep us posted.
