on Friday night a very good friend, next door neighbor and bestest dog buddy in this village died suddenly. Everyone is in shock and sort of floundering around. I still can't freakin' believe it.

I am so sorry

hi guys!! I am from Lansing, thats right, the heart of Lansing where chickens are not an option. :) But now I live in Florida, around St Augustine, in the country, with 1.5 acres and 12 chickens. Just wanted to say HEY to my Michigan peeps!!!! i love reading the posts on this thread, and love seeing all of the cities that I know and love!! When I left MI, I was living in Mason-Holt area. I truely love my Florida life, but miss lilacs! too hot here for them :(. Anyway, we have 6 Sex Link pullets, 4 Barred Rocks, and 2 Bantams (maybe Belgian d'Anvers fingers crossed). Lven the chicken life!!! :) GO STATE!! GO GREEN!!!

Feel free to stop in anytime.

If I don't know you all very well or chat on the forums much so far, do you think it would still be worth the drive out from Rockford/Grand Rapids? I'd probably bring my husband and 2 & 4 year olds to see all the birds.

It is definately worth the drive.

Sarah, Ya know...its always the handful of wingnuts out there that give the good ones a bad name...whether its cops, snowmobilers, motorcyclists....any group....really.
Yea I know. It still pisses me off though. And that story is just horrible.

And thank you for actually answering my question, as Raz was ever so helpful.

I doubt seeing my name on the list will make anyone sign up, lol,
gig.gif
but I will add my name to the list if at any point I have even a loose grasp of whether or not I can go. I hope so. I would like to.

Plus, despite my despicable online behavior, in reality I am rather painfully shy, and am perfectly capable of attending chickenstock without ever managing to introduce myself to a single one of you.

Ya'all are intimidating, you know that?

I've been trying to contrive to possibly go all by myself, *gasp* though DH is rather hesitant to let me do that, since we have no cell phone. And.. I don't know, I might be eaten by chickens, or something? Uh... Nova, you wanna let me borrow your number?

Intimidating? You think so? :) Nah...I also cant believe from all these posts I was reading how so many of you are shy! I used to be when I was a kid, but not anymore lol....you'd never guess I was like that when I was little if you knew me now.

I am getting excited to go see my remaining brother in Indiana this weekend. It will be nice to get away with the girls for a day.
They love when its just us because the rules are more lax...like, we are allowed to laugh at the dinner table- and I dont expect us to sit there as stones, silently putting food into our mouths. My husband believes laughter does not belong at the table. Which, when it is ME who is having a fit of giggles is quite interesting. I cant even make eye contact with my daughters- because that will definitely cause one of us to laugh outloud- and then we are in 'trouble'. They are not as disciplined as I am to 'swallow your laugh'...
besides the hotel we are staying at has a pool. And they can swim and goof off. And Mom really doesnt care. As long as they are behaved around others, and dont run screaming up and down the hallway or do anything to disturb the other hotel guests, they can have fun. They are old enough to now go down to the pool without me- just with each other. Young enough that they feel privledged to do so..:)

I hope you all have a great day. Im off to work now. I will read all 299 posts to catch up once I get home. Chat away, friends!
No laughing at the dinner table, really?? That's where some of the best laughs (and best conversations) happen!!

I love waking up to coffee and BYC. So we are fighting over Raz i see?
lol.png
Raz you playboy! I finished spinning my angora bunny's luscious coat and started to knit a baby hat from it. So much fun. I also made cheese this weekend (Farmhouse Cheddar). This is my first attempt at it and it smells wonderful. Just waiting for the rind to form so that I can wax and stick it in the Cheese Cave wine fridge.

I am practicing on a circular needle....I think I'm doing OK.
I am SO jealous of your cheese making and your yarn!! I would love to be able to do all that...but I don't think I could wait 3 months on the cheese lol...but then again I'd probably make some every month so I'd always have some hehe

I am super shy in group setting, but the chance to talk "chicken" is overriding it. My DH could have a conversation with a tree. He loves to talk, doesn't matter if he knows you or not or you have anything in common.
That sounds like my BF too...he can always talk and is usually pretty funny. And get a couple beers in him and he becomes a hilarious story teller!

What the hell is going on up there!?!?!?!? It's like we live in Soviet Russia or Castro's Cuba now!

This is all I could muster after reading this. It sounds very much exaggerated, but even if it is, it's still disturbing.

That Natural News website is a bit over the top anyway... My cousin is very against vaccinating her daughter and just rubs it in everyones face. The article she had sent to me was about DTap. It seemed under sourced as to where the information came from and they could have made up all of the doctors names...
hmm.png

The hog story smells fishy...
If they were wild boar... they get nasty and destroy nieghborhoods. They have Hog Hunters in Florida because the hogs are hurting people and spreading disease. (Not that I don't think we deserve some animal justice after taking over all of their land)
I would not want them breeding all over MI.
I do think it is very sad that all those pigs had to be killed. Especially because of human error, whether it be DNR or the owner's fault. It would be one thing if they were all ill.
sad.png
I agree. Yes they shouldn't be here, but it still sucks to have them all killed in a mass slaughter rather than being hunted. me = animal lover

So I took the day off work today to go disperse some more resumes and because I'm depressed. I never got the phone call yesterday about that job! Doesn't mean I dont have it, but it really bugs me when someone says they'll do something and then they don't. I hope they call today; they should get my thank you letter today if they didn't yesterday. How long should I wait for a follow up call if I dont hear today? I hate waiting! And I really want to quit my current job!!

Ok I'm gonna go take the dog for a walk & watch the chickens for a few, then off on the job hunt.

I'm jealous of the cheese too! We're big on it here even though it doesn't agree with us. It looks so delicious!

Sarah92480: Good luck on the job hunt. Get a bit of sun as you go through your day and I hope it perks up your spirits a bit.

*sigh*

They did NOT raid "farms" they raided hunting ranches.

The two in the story are this one and this one.

They had not "caught" anything and raised it, they had imported wild boar long ago and had been charging people to hunt them for years.

You know what else has been going on for years? The design of this rule. And yet the ranch owners chose not to destroy their swine earlier.

Those poor, poor pigs that were "shot in cold blood" were 1) intended to be shot in cold blood from before they were even born and 2) would tear you in two and eat your carcass given half the chance.

More hyperbole, more misinformation, more fear mongering. Again.

Thank you again Olive!
In Hawaii the people (mostly men) shot all the wild pig they could shoot and we were all glad as the pigs quickly repopulated and tore up the island terrain. Plus those pigs were used for luau. The people there also shot a lot of Mongoose. That way, on the island we were on, we did not have a problem with the wildlife.
Common sense, common sense..........

I never thought about it like that BackyardFarmMom...maybe that is how they conduct business. But maybe they were super busy too, because they are understaffed (which is why they should hire me, of course). Let's just hope that was it and they really do want me, and will call today.

Anyone know of any people fighting the chicken ordinances in Scio township (Washtenaw County near ann arbor)? I know of some in Lodi, but would like to connect with some in my township. They had changing chicken ordinances on the agenda last summer but then dropped it. We live on an acre on top of metroparks very near to many horse farms. Should not even be zones R2 but we are (no city water, septic or services). Got a chicken eviction notice today. In ann arbor and Ypsi city you can have birds without any mention of acreage. We supposed to have 2.5 acres for 10 birds.
Anyhow, if anyone knows of a group fighting for our right to have chickens please let me know!!!
Thanks:)

I dont want him to tell me when its time to leave, that I dont NEED this chicken or that,,,,that we have enough....etc etc etc...

I am not planning on buying anything, because it's just not really an option, so I'm okay there. Mostly I was trying to get to come by myself so I would actually get to see the event rather than wrangle kids. Otherwise it's chase baby, feed baby, stop toddler tantrum, chase toddler, stop baby from climbing that, get toddler out from under that table, explain why we're not buying that, no you can't have any of that food, etc. etc. etc. and then it's time to go and I didn't see anything but my own kids, and I don't need to drive to Lansing to do that.

And here DH thinks I am so mean when I ask him to take the elbow he keeps jabbing me with off the table!

The event runs from 10am til 3pm and I know that may seem like a lot of time. But the day goes by so quickly that it is difficult to find the time you'd like to talk to everyone. Last year my brother who lives in Muskegon wanted my mother to come to his house for awhile and ask her when she would like to come. She said any time would be fine as long as it was after Chickenstock.

I'm much more worried about not having enough time, we are on late second shift, which is why I am up until 4am, so being all the way in Lansing by 10am is awful, awful early for us.

They both look great! Cheese is the one thing I do not think I will ever, ever get over, Nothing else non-vegan is even the least bit appealing or tempting, but I loved cheese and it still looks soooo good.

I tried my hand at a hat for the first time this year, but I gave up when hat weather was done before the hat was.

That first paragraph is too funny!! I dont have kids but I can totally see that happening! Maybe come the first time by yourself, then bring the family next year? Or do you have family nearby that would babysit for a day?

I taught myself how to crochet last summer, and I really like it but it takes some time. I made my family each something for Christmas, hats I think are my quickest thing to make! I made my dad a pair of thick fishing socks that took FOREVER but were so cool. I started a comforter for our bed but I haven't worked on it much...such a big project feels very daunting to me.
