Well, i don't feel bad if they aren't native, it's just the heritage pig raisers i'm protective over. I don't fancy getting chased down by a wild boar. I have a healthy fear/respect for them, i'd rather face a cougar.

By the way, i was too tired the other day and forgot to complement those turkeys, Olive! They were positively glowing with health, looked great!

Also, on the earlier subject of bananas and MI, what about paw paws? Those are supposed to be native and hardy, and supposed to be the "hoosier banana", according to the ad. "Tastes like banana custard" it says. Anyone ever had one? Thought about getting one, don't know how long 'till you get fruit after planting, though.

I am definitely planting some paw paw trees this year! Wish I could help with your questions, though.

I eat real food, too, you know, Opa!!

If you go by the Bible, though, you know it was quite a long time before God said it was acceptable to eat meat.

Didn't all that stuff happen is less than a week so they could rest after Sunday dinner?

Hey, I was wondering, how often do you guys have to replace metal waterers? I have one of the big galvanized steel ones, and it is starting to rust already in the water tray, it is only a year old and I was rather surprised by this.
Galvanized waterers used to last a long time before the coating degraded and they started to rust. Today's imports don't last as long. A little rust in the water isn't going to hurt the chickens and if it starts looking to bad you could always paint it with Rustoleum paint,

I think you would probably be disappointed. To say it tastes like banana custard is be very generous. Plus the consistency is about like snot.

Lol, Opa. I am not of the particular religious persuasion, but, for the fun of it:

Genesis 1.29-30: "Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so."

Genesis 9.1-5: "Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. “But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal.”"

P.S. Glad to hear that the rust won't hurt them, they don't seem to be drinking out of it all that much and I was worried it was because of the rust in the bottom, but I think more likely it is just because now that everything is not frozen, there are lots of other sources for them to get water from while free ranging.

RaZ, I have hundreds of these in my yard of dandelions and violets... what are they? I have never seen so many at one time.

Ehem...

Well, HH, it looks as you have there, first, a Vanessa atalanta of the family Nymphalidae, otherwise known as, "Red Admiral". The latter depicts, of course, a Vanessa virginiensis, a member of the same family as the former, and carrying the common name, "Painted Lady". There is no difference in appearance between the sexes of Red Admiral, but I may venture to guess that the Painted Lady you have there is, in fact, a lady.

Juise beat me to it.

I was at Matthaei Botanical Gardens all day. There were Red Admirals all over the place. Spring azures, Silvery Blues, and I think a Clouded Sulphur. Quite a few others that I didn't get a good look at.

After taking 2 groups of second graders around the trails, I stayed for a lecture and tour about Massasauga habitat restoration. It was pretty good. The only bad part was that it was given by the guy who beat me out for the job last year.

Stopped at TSC to get a new axle for the flat bed trailer. They had 2 bins of bantams. One bin had 4 snow white little peeps. I didn't even ask...
Then stopped at Veolia and got 2 yards of compost. They compost year round in huge hot piles. It was still steaming when it was loaded. Good stuff, Maynard.

I'll unload it tomorrow and put the new axle on the other trailer. I feel a backache coming on.

Wow. That took me a goodly amount of time to catch up...

Hunting ranches... Opinion... they knew it was coming... they should have stopped breeding, hunted the last of them out, and started a new venture.

Eating meat? My teeth are shaped like that of an omnivore. Show me the beef. I actually do not eat much beef, as pork loin is cheaper, fat content in the cuts I chose are less. And chicken of course. Fish... if I am in the mood. Hard time trusting that... Don't eat much seafood... Allergic to shrimp, scallops, crab, and lobster. Guess thats ok... Red lobster is much to expensive.

What kind of duck is Buck? He looks a lot like my girls, only the grey/brown patch on his noggin...

Miss Skatter... Oh, that silly chicken. I opened the top of the dog house for her, thinking if she wanted to stretch her legs... Well she stretched them all right. All the way back to the big coop. Eggs were cold, and since only the one was developing, but now has a blood ring, I chucked them all to the trees. She'll get some chicks. Also, I went to open the coop and she is on the roost, puffed up and screaming at me. Dang bird. LOL.

Leila still hasn't had her babies pop yet. No pips. I am not worried, as her last brood was over due several days. And she will not leave her eggs for long,

Juise, you're nuts. I could just imagine you and RaZ in the same room. We'd all have to leave pretty quick, cuz you'd both out wit us with your edumacations. LOL. I think you need to lay off the coffee and the adventurous shrooms. HEHE. AND if you want to ditch your kids to go, you may be able to hitch a ride with me.

I am having a real grouch of a day. I think I need sugar. I am thinking chocolate cookies and coffee with vanilla cream. Yup.

As a heritage pig raiser here in MI. Please, don't worry yourself too much. This is really not at all the assault it's being made out to be. I'll put it this way: the DNR is very much aware of and has been in contact with our pigs. They have not contacted us in any way shape or form. And I'm not raising pink pigs in a barn. ;)

I'm behind on the discussion but the article made me laugh. I'm heavily armed when I go out in my yard with the neighbor's dogs. I can tell you I wouldn't be going anywhere near Russian boars if I wasn't heavily armed. That said the DNR tends to do things in ways that only make them look bad no matter how well their intentions.

You know how the truth is usually that makes you laugh the hardest? Well, I literally laughed out loud. Well put. :)
