Daisy is sitting patiently at my feet begrudging me every bite I eat of my breakfast. She seems better today but given her age anything is possible. Joe, my oldest son has suggested that I get another puppy so that when I lose Daisy it might not feel so bad. His job requires traveling all over the US visiting various dog breeders so he has offered to help me locate what ever breed I decide on.

I think I wouldn't mind having one that can help out around here.
You could just get a mix breed too. A mutt from the shelter or something. I'm a big proponent of shelter animals, they need good homes!! And honestly, mutts are the best dogs! They don't have as many of the purebred health issues since their gene pool is bigger and they are so dang cute too! But I agree, ANY dog that could mow the grass would be awesome. Let me know if you find some of those, I'll take 2!

Oh, thanks for the warning on the blu-cote!
lau.gif

It was more bloody than bleeding, it looked like a skinned knee or something (probably from where they pulled all of the neck feathers out).
I have a red light and I tried the blue-cote, I left her out last night because they didn't want any part of her (I think it's a her) but tried again this morning and I think they just hate her for some reason. I mean I don't know what she could have done to them but the second I put her in this morning a couple of them went all long-necked on her and then they all just descended like pirhanas pecking everywhere, not just her neck.
That's terrible! Mean little buggers...thankfully I didn't experience this problem in the brooder, although they did all peck each other a little bit. Hope you can figure something out and she makes it! How sad! They probably don't like her because she smells like food from her wounds and since she's been separated. I'll keep my fingers crossed for her

They really are! I had no idea how vicious they could be. It's, frankly, a little alarming. They rest of them scuffle and peck at each other a bit but there's something about this one that ALL of them really dislike. Thanks for the crossed fingers.

I love this love/hate thing going on between Raz and Juise...Is Sarah in on it too! BYC soap opera!!! LOVE IT

Lol! I'm new here! I'm bound to get scolded at some point! Plus I'm tired...I go to college full-time online, plus take care of my son all day, who will be 3 on Sunday. He was particularly exausting today. I also jumped the gun when we had a warm spell a few weeks ago, and planted 12 of those huge flats with 48 slots each of flowers and tomatoes and peppers. I have to clean out a large portion of my house nightly to bring them in so they don't freeze. With all of the living things around me to take care of, I'm just incredibly pooped! I wouldn't trade it for the world though. :)
I hear ya! I have a three y/o boy and I watch another with his four month old sister! It makes for a tired mama! My house looks like a tornado picked up all the toy bins (we have WAY too many toys) and threw them all around the house. They really like to surprise on where they will hide toys next...

How cool!! I love when elderly people have great advice and knowledge about stuff like that, it's so great to learn the way things used to be done. Too many people these days don't know how to do things for themselves, and if it ever becomes necessary again to live that way, they won't know what to do! I wish my grandma was closer, I'd love to sit & hear about the "good old days". She will be 94 this year.
I wish my grandparents were more willing to share their pasts... A lot of sad things happened to them. I love to listen to anyone willing to share, though!

Poor baby. Maybe they sence she is sick...

Eeyore, you might try putting her separate with a few of the more docile chicks to see if she can make some friends, then re-integrate the whole bunch - that will mean she is not the only "stranger"

Opa, you don't need a dog to mow your lawn, Olive has some geese that will do that for you

Oh good thought, thanks!

And, let's be clear, they're MY geese now! Bwahahahahaha!

(Mostly because if I try to mow my grass with the mower it's going to break. I don't think you can break geese by stuffing them full of grass...)

Good Morning all,
I'm thinking of buying some paint/showgirl hatching eggs from a fellow BYC member, but I really don't want showgirls. If I hatch a couple showgirls hatch, are any of you interested?

I will be getting my chicks next week. Will a very large rubbermaid tub work good? Will I need vent holes?

Kimmie

This is what I have for my brooder, and it's working great. Yes, you do need air circulation in there. What I did was take the lid of the tub, cut out everything but the border part that clips on to the tub, and I hot-glued screen over the hole that I cut out. You can't just cut out a small hole in the lid, because it probably won't be open enough to circulate the air for them.

I used a big rubbermaid tote for a about 2-3 wks until they were too big for it, but I didn't cut any holes in it; I just left the lid off and had wire over the top so they couldn't escape. (That way I could bleach out the tote & use it for other things, lol)

As long as Daisy is still here I won't be doing anything with regard to a new puppy however, while breed isn't a factor being able to help out is.
