Good Morning! Finally, the wind has stopped!!

Starbrightfarms is selling some of her silkie hens. Whoever is interested, they are beautiful show quality birds. Just go to her website or FB page.

Was in Lansing again yesterday. Sometimes I think we need to move back! Kids or grandkids are always needing something. Probably back this week end. Need to repaint a couple of rooms in my son's rental house so we can get deposit back. With four young daughters, it's hard for him to get away. Got to get the beige paint out to cover up the purple and pink walls.

Have a good day!

EMAW, they are bantams

Opa, I thought as much with the small egg size but had to ask. My daughter (10yr old) wants bantams, so I am having her provide me a research proposal on the different breeds she wants. I am leaning towards a real chicken vs the silkies

but it's her project. I am kidding no hate mail please

, everyone needs some silkiebators and I might get some once I start trying to hatching my own chicks. But I am going to talk to her about this option and see if she wants to add this breed to her research project. She is looking at Silkies, d'Uccle, Cochin and now maybe these.

Thanks for the pictures and info.

Chickenstock is about 8 weeks away and there are only 11 people signed up on the pot luck thread.

Please look at the first post to see who is bringing what and then add your very own culinary delight in a reply post. I'll then add you to the list on the first post.

It seems like a long time, but 8 weeks in spring can zoom by before you know it.

We have had a lot of bantams and eaten a lot of bantam eggs. I have never had Silkies so I did not have bantams that went broody until they were older. For example our D'uccle hen went broodie at 2.5 years and our Seabright hen went broodie at 3 years. So they were good layers for a couple years. I LOVE the bantams that Opa has! They look like a more practical bird to own. The D'uccle's are very sweet but with their feather legs and feather faces they often have trouble spotting predators and running! So they are easily the first chicken to get eaten by a predator. The Seabrights were very flighty and hard for us to handle/catch. Opa's bantams look sturdy and practical. If they are good layers and easy to handle then they would be a great choice for a family.

These would be strictly her birds mainly for learning and 4H. That is good information to know about the d'Uccles, I will keep that as a quetion when she is giving me her final pitch. I really don't care too much which bantam she chooses, she is the one in the end that has to be happy with her choice. I will have a LF flock of egg layers (6 to 12 birds as a start). I just can't see myself cooking a 12 egg omlet on the weekends using bantam eggs. I am blessed with a very smart little girl who loves projects like this, her latest was a 2 minute video for Mom on why we need a Maremma puppy to protect the animals. I think she just wants a 120lb fluffy white pillow to lay on in the yard.

I should see if someone will babysit Bubba so we can get the dirt out without worrying about him, and so we can seed the area and actually have it grow.
ANyone want to babysit a sixty pound tortoise for a couple weeks?

Awww, I wish we were closer, I would love to! I forget where exactly you're located, but I am pretty sure it's the other side of the mitten.

Will he eat my ducks? Lol. If you weren't across the state, I'd do it just for funzies.

Nova, you kill me!

Last year the mama bear broke into the cottage across the street to get the bird feed, so is the feed more what they are after than the chickens and eggs?

I'm afraid bears like to eat chicken, too. One step I would take for sure is to store your feed away from your chickens.

Scott... FYI... You can get bantam cochins. They are real chickens. LOL. Mine, when they aren't broody lay pretty little eggs. They really are the perfect size eggs for kids to eat. AND, depending on breed, you can get a range of colors. Mine lay green and pink. My faverolles do not lay white eggs. They lay a tinted egg. If you set it next to a white egg, you'd see.
Here are some faverolle eggs.

By the way, I think if you can, you'd be happy with the Faverolle Bantams. They lay a medium egg. SO, fit into the smaller chicken that your daughter would like, and they are very very sweet birds. The LF Faverolles are also very very sweet birds. Both lay a medium to a medium large egg. My Faverolle hen Buffy, she laid mostly Medium, which as you can see, are not much smaller than a store bought white large egg. There is a guy up here in Muskegon, where you can get very good quality Faverolles.

Also, Loved my leghorn for white eggs. They start laying, and they do not stop. They are very curious, and some people say flighty... as in they fly around. Mine certainly did. She liked to get on top of the coop doors and hang out. She like to follow me everywhere. Waiting to see what I would drop for her. Darn dogs.

As for silkies... LOVE SILKIES! And they are real chickens. You can even eat them if you do not mind black skinned chickens with black bones. HAHAHA

DO NOT LET 6YR OLD BOYS WATCH "MEN IN TIGHTS!" Freakin Mel Brookes...

One thing about those metal yard roosters.... they don't last too long. Rust settles in real quick with those sculptures.
What a beautiful day!! In for luncy and then I'm back out again. Enjoy!
