Since I have had kindness and generosity shown to me, I'll going to pass some of it forward. I'm giving away all the bantum chicks, d'uucle chicks 3 porcelain and 1 awful cute brown one,
:( Thee was 2 of us looking, one was me, but you live really far away.... I live in coopersville, over by farmerboy and not far from chicken grandma. The little browns in the middle are like the first ones i got, still unsure on their color!

This is from shipping stress, i would put a tiny bit of sugar in their water, or some liquid chick vitamins, and dip her beak in it a few times. They don't have to drink the first 3 days after hatching, but they are probably at that point. Also, to encourage her to eat more you can tap at the food with your finger, and hold it there. They should all come running, and by holding it there a minute it will encourage them to keep eating, if they have a weak appetite. The most important is the water, though. Otherwise they will not be able to process the food.

She is probably a weaker chick, on account of her size, and will need encouragement the next few days. You can also smush some chick food with spoons, and make a warm mash in the bottom of a pop/milk cap, and dip her into that too. Usually after a few dips they will start to swallow. When her crop is full, you will feel a little soft spot on her top left side as you are looking at her. Just make sure you don't dip her nose holes! One of mine was this way, and is still small, but boy does she zip and outrun the "big guys" now! :)

We are bringing in idirt to raise the ground up some- its very low and floods regularly. I need ground cover that will grow- besides this awful weed that I cannot use enough elbow grease to get rid of. That grows fine- and soon chokes out everything else.
Mow the weedss at the lowest setting of your mower. Then lay down newspaper before you spread the topsoil. Six layers of paper with the soil on top will smother the weeds.

The peeps have arrived! That phone call at 6:05 this morning could only be one thing. Post office! I jumped out of bed and drove to the post office post haste! All of the chicks seem healthy and happy except for one. She is smaller than the others and just sorta stands there and seems uneasy on her feet. Her head and wings are both a little droopy. I did see her peck at a little bit of food though, so hopefully she will come around. Hope to get some pictures a little later!
Did you dip the chicks beaks in the waterer when you put them in the brooder?

I did this with a massive nettle patch last spring except I used cardboard (good use for the moving boxes). This year not only are the nettles (mostly) gone but the soil underneath is the richest, fluffiest earth ever.

Course I have some of those devil weeds growing on it myself. Those things are terrible!

I'm from Shelby Township, MI, where the ordinances say "no poultry". If anybody else is out there, and wishes to join me on an adventure, let me know. I would like to get the ordinances in the Twp. changed. I'm not talking about claiming my state rights given by the RTFA. Many people don't want to be drug into court hearings for months on end proving they conform to GAAMPs and are commercial in nature. There should be a way to get the ordinances changed to allow for up to 6 PET hens, without having to go commercial or jump through all kinds of hoops. It's being done all over the country, so it is not IMPOSSIBLE if enough of us band together.

Anybody? I don't mind going to Twp. meetings and researching, etc. I've been surfing and there are many, many people who have brought a case to their city officials and got the laws/ordinances changed. I would love for a bunch of us to get together and pester them until they have no other alternative. I know there are many "outlaws" in the Twp. who already own a flock and are holding their breath hoping they don't get caught. Let's do something about it! I am very familiar with VikkiP's case, but she herself will tell you that she spent mega bucks to defend and keep her flock. She is definitely commercial, and owns far more chickens than I would be able to own in my tiny backyard. Her case is a bit unusual also because of "grandfather" issues. But I am speaking of people like me who just want to keep a few pet hens for our family's use (eggs, fertilizer, companionship, etc.). I know it is possible if enough of us get together and don't back down. Numbers speak. And I really want some chickens and would like others to be able to have them too.

C'mon. Let me hear from you!!! The sooner we get started, the sooner we will have our chickens.

3) It seems like most wet plants aren't edible - no fruit trees/bushes like spongy soil, even plants aren't that keen on it (except I guess celery...). It would be nice if I could plant some bushes or trees that I could eat the fruits of.

I pretty much get massive amounts of sunlight. The ground is just wet. Always.
Cranberry and blueberry are swamp shrubs (Vaccinium spp.).

I wish I had an attractive, shirtless farm hand who also cooked and cleaned and rubbed my feet.

Wait, what were we talking about?

THERES A MACHINE FOR THIS???????????? AND you got PAID?????? I spent my summers shucking corn, and getting all the corn silk off...did it for hours and hours when all my friends were playing and getting in trouble/ I had to shuck corn. I hated corn. My gramps didnt care if I hated corn. Just do it- "why do I care if you hate it? It doesnt matter if you love it or hate it, you are still shucking it..." And he would sit on his porch swing and WATCH me shuck it. Stupid big ol pile of corn. And he would sit on his porch, drink his tea, smoke his cigarette and occaisonally yell out to tell me to be careful that I wasnt wrecking..nope, not wrecking..RUINING the kernels. He sold that corn, a dollar a dozen- shucked and de-silked. My labor. His dollar.

Man, I sure do miss that man. I would love to go shuck corn for him now. Just to see him sitting on that ol porch swing, smoking his cigarette again.

I love this story, thanks for sharing :)!!!

I was trying to think about a quick way to make another coop (aside from the out house which will take a bit more thought and planning)........... and it hit me! I have a small octagonal gazzebo that was pretty solid, and not used at all. So I asked dad if he had some wood I could use for siding and ohhhhhh did he ever!!... I got some beautiful 12" weathered barn siding boards! I'll do a simple board n batton siding and fix the roof, it should work great! I'm excited!

This is my boy Gino...such a goof!

Mom, what are you doing to my babies!!! LOL!

What a handsome fella!!!!

I'm a chicken outlaw in Garden City. My arraignment is May 15. I'm hoping to have the ticket dismissed since the officer did not see any chickens at all.

However, I'm gathering as much information as possible, just in case. The ordinance here says we can only have dogs, cats, canaries or other common pets. Considering the growing popularity of chickens, I think I can make a case if needs be.

Really? I always read/heard that they (blueberries, I mean) liked sandy well-drained soil. (I love blueberries, too. If I could get some pears and blueberries going here I would be ecstatic)

WE FOUND THE DIAPERS!!!! My oldest was on his way home from school on the bus and seen a bunch of 'big' kids (teenagers) wearing them on their heads and using the prefolds as bandanas. Hubby informed the police and the kids where all caught with them. Parents where called and they gave them all back. One mom even gave us all of her old AIO's. I just can't believe that they had these on their faces. Two of the boys will be mowing my lawn and building my chicken coop with us. Their dad was ****** to say the least, and volunteered them to come over everyday after school for the next month. And on the plus side my chickens are getting their 'grown up' feathers!
That's wonderful! Sounds like those kids were really being "buttheads". Hopefully they have learned their lesson.

So when I bathe my chicken, at what point to I add the noodles and vegetables?
