Just read it. Could you imagine being such a back side hole that you get banished from your own home with a restraining order?!

WOW!

Anyway. Got the heat lamps back in the meaties coop. I figure at 2 weeks old, they won't take the 40 degree weather to well. I put in 2-75 watt bulbs, one black, one red. Works for me.

I got all the water-ers scrubbed out today. Got the piglet water-er installed on the outside of the run, down low enough so even the littlest chicks can drink. I got some of the Manna-Pro water additive, supposed to keep the water from getting icky. Has anyone tried it? Or does everyone just stick with the ACV? Well, I got it in their. Will see what happens. I have well water, and I tell you what, it sure doesn't take long to get the green slime on the insides.

I went and took a good looksee at the panels my neighbor has. There are 4 panels and a door. Looks like I would just need to get corner brackets. If I had to guess, it looks to be an 8x6 run maybe. I tried knocking, but no one answered. Will go on over again tomorrow. I hope I can get it cheap. Would be real nice to have another run like that for the winter. And with the size, would be fairly easy to both roof for the winter, and now obviously, and have a nice area added on to the other for an even bigger winter run. Oh yeah.

Crossing my fingers.

Have 4 pullets laying now from the chuckles group. I figure Leila and Skeeters chicks should start by the middle/end of next month also. The boys from those groups are starting to get frisky also.

Hawk decided that she would fly up and perch on my shoulder today. HEHE, YES SHE IS A PET! She is a bit of a scatter brain. Find her on her own a lot. Well anyway, she tried to eat my nose, my glasses lens, and even nearly got me in the eye. I can have peas or corn in my hand, and she'll attempt to eat my fingers first. Silly chicken. (Not to be confused with Silly Chicken)

This is what has been flying around in my garden.

My new metal rooster I bought while in Lansing at Hobby Lobby, I love hobby lobby wish I had one here.

Got my EE chicks today, they gave me 3 striped brown ones and a charcoal gray one and said they were EE's, I hope so.

Kimmie
I picked up two at a flea market for a song and dance, I like em.

New one from SW Michigan here, Allegan Co. Just finishing our coop, looking for what people do in the Winter to keep the coop warm. It's amazing how many people share their experiences here.

Mom, Yes, but can you suggest a ground cover to use? That is where I am stuck. I have ivy around the tree. But I
I would suggest thyme, I would like to know what kind of rosemary people get to have it over winter in MI. never had luck with rosemary??
I had one of these buzzing around me this evening. I thought it was a bee, then I thought it was a humming bird because it went right for some srawberries I put in my compost bin. I had to google bumble bee humming bird... only to find it is a bumblebee moth. it was so fast, I was sure it was a humming bird!
We have found a few over the past few days. I had never seen one before.

Cool!
LOVE the humming bird moth. they come out in the evening. grand daughter was watching the evening primrose open and a humming bird moth dropped in for a visit. She was very excited
finally caught up on most of the posts,

Nova glad to hear your sister is doing a little better, does not sound nice. will keep her in our prayers
Freedom Range meat birds are read to process now all we have to do is either get them to the Amish or do it ourselves.

Mistake that reinforce why one should not put things off.

Mistake One
I had a broody hen who eggs should have hatched Wednesday or Thursday of last week. Since arriving home late last Friday night I have been thinking about taking the eggs out from under her and returning her to the flock.

Mistake Two
This morning I had a few minutes before I had to go to a doctor's appointment so I thought I'd run out and take care of the hen. While I was dressed, I was still wearing my house slippers. I grabbed the protesting bird from the nest and tucked her against my body to restrict her struggles while I opened the door.

She immediate decided to demonstrate her unhappiness with me by void everything she had eaten for the past week. She had to have been storing up for at least that long or how else could so much have come from her. I have also never observed it being as wet or containing so much undigested feed.

I did get to observe it extremely well as it ran from my mid chest, down on leg, and didn't stop until it completely covered the toe of one house shoe. Removed my shirt and hosed it off with the garden hose as well as my pant leg and shoe. Then had to hurry in to clean up better and put on fresh clothes so I could make the doctor appointment.

Mistake Three
This afternoon I thought I'd open the eggs to determine at what stage the development stalled. These were eggs nearing 30 days of incubation. She had reduced the number of eggs until she was on sitting on three. I took them well beyond the chicken coop and cracked the first 2 and found they had quit early.

The third however, was a completely different experience. I barely touch the egg to the egg of a board when it exploded with a loud band propelling a noxious fluid that covered my hand, splattered my shirt, speckled my pants, and spotted my shoes.

Lesson learned............Procrastination some times has dire or at least smelly consequences.

This is for you opa, you need a good laugh after today

I put in a Gladware sandwich size container with a few stones in the bottom and some sandy dirt from the yard. They love it!

Great idea I will tomorrow, they need something to do.

I have absolutely nothing against naming birds and animals or the people who do so. When my sons were small they quite often had names for the calves and hog that they knew were destined for the chopping block. They would even ask i fwe were were eating a particular animal. As long as children are very much aware of a critter's purpose and fate they probably adapt quicker than we do. Personally I don't form any kind of emotional attachment to an animal ultimately headed for the pot. I never think of them as pets.

I think I'm in total agreement. But then, maybe I'm just heartless. Or maybe it's because dad would hunt and bring food home for the table. It was all so normal.

Our neighbor was a bit upset when her grandson came over and we were slaughtering chickens. But then, I thought it was rather rude to send a child over to our house, and have him come in the back yard when we didn't answer the door.
