So I am in trouble for having a few chickens here in the city but the greater problem is this...

The goll-darn bacon to my eggs is missing.
What has this world come to?

We are super worried about our $6,000 pig sculpture (that makes no sense to have in a city that does not allow farming of any kind). Please help us find it instead of the guy who shot up _____ (fill in blank). Oh, and remember, pigs are illegal in GC. Have a nice day.

REALLY???

Can you cite some studies?
I'd like to read some of the peer reviewed literature.

On which part, Randy? That coons carry and spread rabies or that they're significant carriers of Canine Distemper in our region?

I understand that you're upset about your case, but I don't see how it lessens the importance of the vandalism and/or stealing of art in the area. Art is an important part of any community's culture. Stealing and vandalism that deters people from being able to share and appreciate art is a cultural issue. Just because it's a pig? And therefore you're making it about farm vs city?

Either part. I'd like to become more informed on rabies transmission as well as canine distemper. Understanding the carriers and the mode of transmission can only help.
Quote: I am not upset about my case. It is what it is and will be played out in full.

Nor am I trying to lessen the impact of vandalism or theft of art objects in this city, or anywhere else. In fact, the DIA has a contract to display several works of art within the city boundaries. The fact that the art displayed was a pig is immaterial. The thieves could have just as easily stolen the sculpture of the naked woman. What I find ironic is that of the dozen or so pieces on display, the only thing stolen was the "farm" sculpture. I think that someone has a message that they are trying to convey.

Ahh, in that case, not the studies themselves but some good sources of credible info:

General Rabies info via Purdue (citations at bottom of page)

Raccoon Disease in General, also via Purdue. The paragraph of note:

Quote:
Our own DNR's info page on Distemper in MI.

And their info page on Rabies. Plus the reported rabies incidences maps for MI.

There is a whole wealth of information out there for anyone who wishes to read more, but these are a very good start.

I see. Your comments seemed to convey a much different feeling on the matter.

Credible, but a bit dated. Not that I dispute the findings, I would like to see something more recent. I'll ask a prof at school and my vet for more recent information. Especially if they can define where the "northeast" is.

Conclusion: There have been no confirmed human deaths associated with rabid raccoons; however, there has been an increased number of rabies cases in domestic animals in the northeast due to raccoon rabies. Therefore, rabid raccoons could potentially lead to human exposure through rabid domestic animals.

I'm not sure what you read into my "feeling" of the matter. But art speaks to people on many levels. I've never found that appreciation is unfounded to the viewer.

You're a smart guy, I figured you'd take it and run. :)

Well, I just thought your comment on the article itself came across as rather combative and your ending -- "aren't there more important issues to be addressed" -- seemed to call into question whether or not you found public art to be of worth. IOW, that pursuit of the case is a waste of time.

Well, here in town, there has been a rise in crime against the citizens.
So in keeping things relative, I think it is more important to protect the people than worry about something that is most likely a prank.
The artwork pig will probably show up. The hit and run driver will likely not be caught. The shop-lifter gets away. Drug deals in the park go un-checked. That's just the way things go here in the 'burbs. It frustrates me.
The other thing is that art pig was installed in front of a Muslim owned business which closed not long afterward. Kind of ironic, I think.
