Something else I've never done either is to make a homemade pie. If it doesn't come pre-made I don't serve it LOL. Never been into cooking and chit like that. Not my thing. Would always prefer to clean a barn or something before doing that stuff. I always told hubby that is why they make restraunts hahahaha

Oh this thread is awesome !!

Hiya. From west bloomfield MI:)

Recently I got into chickens . The only way I can keep them is if I hatch these eggs . So I'm hoping. Praying. Glad to see so many chicken owners in MI !!!!!!!!!

I like to cook and bake, but I'm rarely allowed in the kitchen. That's Aric's domain. He said since he lost his man cave to the birds he HAS to keep the kitchen

on contact with you brother. Real easy pickle recipe. Your grocer sells in the canning supply section. My #1 daughter had never canned pickles before. and after borrowing my canning books. She gave up and tried this method. They didn't come out bad and was easier for her.

Robin.... I thought you just had your 21st? How time flies!

Nova ... How's the hand doing?

Mom2.. How's DH doing?

My oldest daughter would do that. Get up in middle of night and it didn't make any difference who's closet she hit. Really found she had a sleep walking problem on night when the dog started barking. Went to investigate and found her sitting in the car in the middle of the winter. She has been found in some very odd place. Really scary on night had keys and she drove about 6 miles and she woke up in empty shopping center. Now much older her DH still has to hide keys at night.

We all LOVE our chickens on here lol. Good luck with the hatching eggs. I have some of RIRJen's eggs in the bator right now.

The little ducky was still breathing this morning. Momma hasn't moved since I checked this morning, but there were 3 more pips. Later today I thought I saw 2 little head peeking out underneath her, but can't be sure. There were 9 eggs total this time.
Yay! How exciting!

Those are hilarious!
Seriously, I HIGHLY recommend what I had before my DSLR. The Fuji Finepix S28HD. I sold mine to my niece's fiance who owns a very popular tattoo shop in Lansing. I bought it for $300 and sold it to him for $200. You can't add lenses to it but you can add some cool filters which I had too. There are of course better ones now but that one was awesome. It had a much better zoom than my DSLR. It had 14mp with 18x optical zoom. It does a lot of the same stuff my DSLR does so I kinda had it easy when I bought my Nikon. It takes absolutely fabulous photos and it has the look of a DSLR too! Just a suggestion.

If you're looking to buy a better camera but you don't know how to pull it off, well if you have good/decent credit, try the bill me later program on ebay. You don't have to make a payment for 6 months and then you can make minimum payments. You can also buy rebuilt cameras like I did with my last Fuji (I've had 3 I liked them that much!) from somewhere like Ritz Camera which is at least 20% cheaper than buying one anywhere else...and they accept bill me later!
I'm a Nikon girl! I want a DSLR so bad! I have a point and shoot Nikon Cool Pix right now...it takes great pix...i just wish it had optical zoom instead of digital...digital stinks.
Cameras? Here's an idea. New cameras are very nice but some DLSRs cost a ton. You can haunt the local camera stores for used cameras with factory warranties. I stopped by the Camera Shop in muskegon yesterday and played with a Pentax that was discontinued in 2009. I talked to guy to his lowest price and then checked the internet. On used camera sites you can also get them at a steal. This course of action is'nt for everyone since they are used albiet in excellent condition. I did not end up with another DSLR yesterday though. My next one has to have a HDMI adaptive port of full 1080p streaming be it stills or movie. BTW, even though some people think brands matter I believe you should only look at what crtiteria you NEED and go with the most cost effective one. A good online review page is Steve's Cameras.

Good luck

P.S. Pentax have been my choice since 1977! I can even adapt old 70's lenses to a modern K mount DLSR.
Good to know! I wish we had a camera shop even remotely close to here!
Summertime in Mi is spent hurrying to get things done before the next winter gets here

I did have a conversation with Juise. She's well. Been too busy with summer things and other activities that require her attention. She does get on, but just a quick catch. She'll be around when things settle back down.
Belle looks like she's going to be my next casualty. I noticed her off last night, but no pasty butt, no swollen eyes, breathing sounded fine. I figured maybe egg bound. I found her this morning, off the roost, under a table. I think she fell off and broke herself. They roost on a cabinet that's about 6 feet tall. So upsetting...
Summer is super busy time! I have 4, 6 and under, plus all the family stuff, camping, and getting ready for our next homeschool year...yes...super busy!
So sorry about Belle!
Hello to everyone, I miss having the time to read and chat with you guys. Things are still insane here, still waiting to see how everything will come out. Top of the list is whether we will have our mortgage adjustment approved, or we will be foreclosed on. I realize these things take time, but uuuggghhhh. Waiting sucks. Sure makes it hard to keep putting work into this house and property in the meantime.

Anyway, I'm almost 1000 posts behind, so there is no way I can catch up, I just read the last page. Nova, if you decide to go with Ivermectin, I just bought a bottle a few weeks ago and could give you some. It would take all eternity to use up on our little flock.

Hope everyone is well. We did get our first blue egg, the girls were ballistically excited.

That happened to us and after over a year of messing around and living in a house that was too small for us, we walked away, let them foreclose, filed bankcruptcy and have a way better house for our family now. The banks make me so mad. We had our house financed for $100,500 (bought it RIGHT before the market tanked
he.gif
) tried to modify, couldn't get it to work, they foreclosed, re-sold it for $15,000, and that owner just did a few cheap reno's and flipped it. Makes me so sad. :(

Yay! Hi pretty eggies!
I forgot to mention, all 9 duck eggs hatched and I have 9 fluffy muscovies. Looks like 5 will be white and 4 will be black and white. Maybe I can bring some to the northern Chicken Stock if anyone wants any, they'll be 2 months old by then and I think I should be able to tell male from female.
Yay!!! Woohoo!
It's like a meet 'n greet of us MI BYC folks! A chance to put a face to the screen names. Apparently there's one in the beginning of summer, generally hosted in the Lansing area. Potluck lunch, fowl swap, etc. One is in the organizational phase for this fall in a more northerly location.....possibly the Grayling area? Someone has links to it in their sig. otherwise you can search the chickenstock/meetup subforum.
smile.png
Ooh! Might have to try to make this! Wish I would have been able to hit the Lansing one though...I think that is closer.
Good luck, my parents have been working on an adjustment for over three years. Got to the point of foreclosure several times but with all the new programs/legislature, it keeps getting extended with several trees worth of paperwork. They gave up and moved south a year ago but it looks like it may actually go through this time.
Same type thing happened to us. :/
She's dead. A rusty butter knife once used by Columbus himself will work if it's what you've got.

Speaking of worming, I spent several hours yesterday catching and orally dosing my chickens with 1/2 ml Ivomec. I lost a hen Monday night to what I believe was worms. She had been having watery diarrhea and then laid two shelless eggs. I finally caught her Monday night and cleaned her butt up, trimmed the feathers and pulled out the rest of an egg that was hanging from her vent. Since this was the first time I had held her I didn't realize how thin she had gotten. I put her in a carrier and tried to get her to eat some oatmeal but she wasn't interested. I finally covered her up and decided to try again in the morning. Around 2:00 a.m. I heard her banging around in the carrier and knew she was in her death throws. I checked and she had passed. Poor girl. I had wormed them in May and since no one else was showing symptoms I thought she was just prone to diarreah. She acted normal in every other way. No eye or nose discharge, eyes clear, feathers good, no lice or mites, eating with everyone else and drinking good. Well, I thought no one was showing symptoms, but also read that a pale comb and wattle can also be a sign of worms and one of my Marans hens does have that. So, yesterday after dosing everyone I came back in the house and spent some time on BYC re-reading what I could find on worming. Now I have read that Ivermectin is not the best for worming, but Valbazen and Safeguard used alternately gets every kind of worm they could have. Dawg on the Emergency and Diseases thread is pretty knowledgeable as well as several others. See https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/576036/necropsy-results-is-not-coryza-or-crd-parasites-are-rampant/80. So, in 10 days I will retreat with Valbazen and hope I get them cleaned out. Anyway, I was also burning two huge piles of brush from the oak tree that finally fell into my pond. Instead of burying the hen I threw her on the fire and cremated her. A half hour later my neighbor calls to tell me that my chicken on the grill is killing her! I did smell good.

My daughter just dumped the pheasant bator! !!
Oh no! How are the eggs? Are you going to try to keep going, did they break? Any hope? So sorry!
CG, it is even in the blog from mike the chicken vet....
A good day for ducks but not so good for Showgirls or Silkies. Snowball and Buzz as I found them in the chicken yard.

Snowball and Buzz after having a rinse, towel dry, blow dry and two hours sitting in the bathroom under a fan.

Oh no! What happened? They look much prettier in the bottom pic!
Ivermectin don't kill all the kinds of worms. That's why i suggested the horse wormer, It kills even tapeworms with only one dose. You can use zimectrin gold too. When you know what exactly you are dealing with, you can go with a gentler wormer that will target that kind of worm, but in a mystery case where they are dying and a vet isn't an option, i do the "nuke" approach and kill them all. Perhaps these are the capillary worms, then? They are supposed to be too small to see. I will look up the symptoms for those ones.

Normally when a chicken/bird falls, even in the dark, they flap and break their fall even if they don't know where they are going.......... The fact that bones were broke, and she was directly under the roost spot says she probably wasn't responsive when she fell. Good news is that she probably went to sleep and just didn't wake up.

OK, i don't like the new picture format. :( But guess what i'm having??? yum. This time i added an extra 1/2 ts of salt, pre-coated with flour, and upped the water to 1 cup and the milk to 1 cup. Mmm. My new go-to recipe!
Well, from previous posts I am guessing fried green tomatoes (is that using the batter recipe) but I was thinking either eggs and sperm as previously posted, eggs that mysteriously the whites aren't cooking on, or some type of pancake...lol
A couple thoughts from a newbie:
My Silkie "Quoth" is the only chicken that I don't have to chase to catch. I just bend down and scoop her up with one hand. All the other chickens protest with various degrees of outrage when held; Quoth is content. When I give old kitchen scraps to the chickens, she can't find a piece under her nose, and if she manages to find one, it takes her so long to decide to eat it that it's long gone before she decides it's edible. She is great as a fun little creature distantly related to the chicken. She would survive about three seconds in the wild.
On mortgages: ours is in trouble (recession), the mortgage company threatened foreclosure then offered to make an adjustment. In one bunch of papers they sent us, they included, very much by mistake, an internal document recommending that our interest rate (which is over 7 percent) be cut to 3 percent and our monthly payment be reduced.
What they actually offered us was the same interest rate and doubled the monthly payment.
To add insult to injury, their legal firm then sent us a foreclosure notice by mistake. The notice came late on a Friday so we believed all weekend that we were foreclosed. After many phone calls on Monday, they admitted it was a "clerical error."
Fun! But we still have a house and each other. And chickens. All is well. (and we eat a lot of beans.)
Banks make me so mad...glad you have your house though!
That's where we have a common bit in the fact that my daughter hates her dad that much, too. There were things irreplaceable he destroyed and things in general that he did or allowed his new wife and step-kids to do that sent her over that edge. She hasn't seen or spoken to any of them in 4 years. My son stopped contact 3 years ago and my youngest just this year in January. I warned him repeatedly what his actions would do, but he never listened.

I re-set my trap again. Last night something came around, took my bait and triggered the trap, but managed to get away.

Oh, tiny funny story. I was putting my bantams in the fenced yard and our d'uccle roo, who is getting a bit challenge-y lately, scuttled up to the fence like 'bring it, lady'. So I leaned down, gave him a look and went 'boo!' with a flash of hands. He jumped 3 feet straight up and ran away. It was so hilarious.

This is the 6th night in a row I've had hiccups late at night.

I can't sleep. Partially because I've had severe pain in my feet for a while but also because I'm getting 3 geese tomorrow!!! We've done some rearranging for the time being til we can get some stuff built to house them. I'm SO excited. KrisRose and chickflick are awesome to bring them to me!!!

I just checked my email and got the shock of my life!!

For those that are new, long story short, my dad found my long lost brother that he hasn't seen since he was 3 years old. They've been communicating for the last year and my dad went out to see him a couple of months ago. Well, my dad kept me up to date on their communication but he never gave me his email or phone number.

Recently I was given access to a paid account on Ancestry.com and guess who was on there! So I wrote to him, introduced myself and made it very short. That was a month ago. He wrote to me tonight! He's coming here next month and I'll FINALLY GET TO MEET MY BROTHER!!!

Now I really won't be able to sleep LOL
yaayayayayay! Long story short, my dad has been married and divorced at least 10 times...I have lots of half brothers and sisters, and almost all of us were "lost" at one point and time...now most of us are very close. :)
Er... eggs being fertilized by sperm?

It's raining, it's pouring, it's 5:15 in the morning! I am all alone, where is my phone, cuz this thread is really boring...
Hehe. No, really. It is raining. Thunder and lightning too.

lol! That was pretty good! I was almost up then...about a half hour later...but my internet was down from the storm. :/
Just stopping to tell M2M that not on,y does that Uggo have a very nice crow now...although his form is hilarious...he seriously has the smoothest rooster dance to lure in the ladies. They don't even see him coming when he snuggles up to them then BAM! Tries to pounce. Lol
gig.gif
And newb ??...what are Uggo's?
sorry, the reason for my story is that broad called last night. Ugh! Still mad. My house may be hillbilly, but it ain't no dump. And my kids are very love worthy. Except when they wake up in the middle of the night, walk in my room and pee on the floor... Yup... That was last night too.
Ugh...or wake up in the middle of the night puking...that was my night 2 nights ago. :/
I would be so excited as well. I can't imagine life without my sister. My brother was murdered in Kalamazoo a few years back but he has never lived around us. He did 2 terms in the Navy and was always gone. He was just starting to get back in our lives when he was murdered. But my sister is something else. She is the apple of my eye (baby sister) and I would die if we were separated.
So sorry about your brother.
Hello snowflake.
big_smile.png
I was spotted. Usually I don't have much to say, just trying not to get left behind.
Hope you have a good time this area of the state, swampducks.
I'll be camping in St. Clair for the boat races this weekend. So far the weather forecast looks good so hopefully I won't need to go home to check the chickens. No problems so far, although I have been giving frozen water bottles, spraying the run, and chicksicles (frozen fruit pieces). When I'm not working all day at least, then they're on their own. Their run is secure (I think, hope) so they hang out under the coop all day. Fan is running in the coop all the time also. Entertainment is 4 mama hens with 9 chicks between them ( thanks Theron). One hen is in a brooder- hutch thing and was out with her chicks while I was changing waters. The little bantam hen was acting tough when the Marans hen came close to the chicks. The Marans hen said heck no and a chick fight was on. First I grabbed the Marans hen and tossed her (forced short flight). When she came back I sprayed her with some water and wow did that end things fast. She thought the bantam hen must have some super ninja power so she ran off.
lau.gif
Super Ninja Chicken! Yes! We are camping this weekend too! Woohoo! Neebish Island for hubby's family reunion, then Metamora/Hadley State Park not far from our house for homeschool camp. :D
SO, can anyone provide me with an easy, zesty recipe for canning pickles? I've canned many things in my life and I've always wanted to try pickles. I looked up recipes but there were so many that I don't know what's best. Plus many of them required a lot of ingredients and I just want something simple!
No...but I want one too! I have an OLD canning book, let me see what I can find. :)

Headed out in the rain this morning with my 4 year old DD before the rest of the kiddo's were up to check out our newly bloomed sunflowers and check on the garden...my monster tomatoe plant did NOT like being transplanted and I think got stepped on because it was bent, but not totally broken, so I staked it and we'll see what happens. I have one mystery plant, and I have two small plants that I thought were tomatoes but the "baby tomatoes" are now turning blue? Some weird berry plant? Any ideas? I also have tons of Pumpkin blossoms but no baby pumpkins yet.
hu.gif
And then I have a few nice cucumbers coming in, but how do I know when to pick them? lol! When the spikes are gone on the side?

Haven't made much progress on the duck house...keep revamping the design and breaking down pallets sucks! Lots' to do today to get ready for this weekend...and now to deal with crabby kids... :/
