Just back from helping out the nice old couple behind me. It seems that their labs were "playing" with the sprinkler on the newly sodded area of the backyard and caused a mini flood that washed a ton of soil into their neighbors driveway.

Two full grown labs had dug a mud hole knee deep and made quite the mess. So I loaded up my 2 biggest carts with soil and took my wagon train around the block to fill in the hole and help clean up. Then I took some extra fencing and posts over to block off the area so the dogs can't get into that area again until the new grass seed grows.

Not that I'm bragging or anything, but isn't that what neighbors are supposed to do? Help each other.

It used to be, unfortunately there isn't too much of that going around anymore.

You did a good thing, and it only takes one link to start a chain.

We do stuff for and trade stuff with our next door neighbor Tom all the time. He borrows our tools, tiller, and Aric's talents with fixing anything, especially cars. We take his food out of his gardens whenever we want them, borrow his wheelbarrow and sprinklers. He puts up with our noisy animals, we put up with his spoiled kids when they're home.

The rest of the neighbors, minus the drunk across the street we never hear from. The drunk does like to come over and claim he's done this or that (like when SWAT was down the road for the hostage situation) or that he is almost blind...yet he drives every day! I think he glued a beer can to his hand because in the 2.5 years I've been here I've NEVER seen him without one LOL

Something killed my porcelain d'uccle..was only a week old at Chicken stock so how old does that make her? Anyhow...she still stuck with Mama Hen, but not all the time now. I just found her BODY- no head, neck, legs, or wings. Horrified me.
Disgusted then horrified me.

then pithed me off.

I want to blame the dogs. Its not their style though, and they have virtually ignored this chick. they never remove the parts.

So, Im pithed enough to go on ebay and get me some more for my broody.

Awww so sorry Kim. My 2 are doing just great. Hope you get what did it.

We can not keep a rooster. I noticed you posted where(ish) you live. We are about 2 miles south and a little west of you. So... Penny is packing for collge. ;)
We got our chicks from Townline. So, either we start again with 2 more chicks, we take a gamble and get another hen (maybe 2) from someone else, or we keep just 2.
Oh you are right, a rooster won't fit into your neighborhood!

I would get two more from Townline. I honestly think it is best to get them from the same place for biosecurity health reasons.
I know it is not a guarantee of good health but whenever you go to someones farm or even the feed store, you risk bringing home a bug you don't want to have at your place!

I have gotten chickens of all ages from a lot of different places and people and have never had a single problem with disease or anything. If they do then I will treat for it. It sure wouldn't stop me from getting chickens from someone else.

I don't mean to diminish any biosecurity concerns. I also don't get too distressed over what may be a potential risk when it comes to expanding my flock.

My current group has come from at least 5 different sources over the last 2 years. Plus, other BYCers have brought birds here for swapping. My girls are hale and hearty and I haven't heard from anyone who has visited here that their flock has had any communicable bug. Even with the wild ducks that have grown up here, not to mention the wild birds that visit every day.

I certainly appreciate the concern about spreading ANY disease among our birds, but I haven't seen anything to lead me to biosecurity paranoia. I do sympathize with those who have lost precious flocks to disease. It is a terrible thing to have happen. I just don't go overboard with any sneeze or hiccup that may happen.

My sense of humour has me imagining a bunch of chickens in plastic bubbles, rolling around the yard.

I did forget stress, but other then the heat which we have no control over there has been no abnormal stress and I have had this problem for almost a year, about every 3 days some one lays soft shelled eggs and they make a mess in the nest box.... I do give vitamin powder to the water when it gets so hot, I don't think it is contaminated feed, or more hens would have the problem...could be something lacking in the feed but they get good quality feed
