When we joined, I called our extension office. I was told that Mrs. A would be given my contact info & that if she didn't call within 48 hours I was to call the extension staff, again. Mrs. A called - hour 40. So we were good!
I would suggest you call your local MSU Extension office & chat with a staff member. Also, there's info on the MSU website. (Can you tell that I'm a Spartan?

). I believe that to start your own group you need a certain number of kids (7 or 8???) from three different families. Our group meets ever other week. We do crafts & service projects in the winter. Spent spring getting ready for fair.
Good luck! 4-H is really terrific. I have never met such sweet & giving parent volunteers.

Yep---ask about the birds and then ask about the 4-H groups that are represented there. It seems easier to engage someone in person, especially when you are asking them about their animal/bird. Asking around will also give you a chance to check out the people and see if it seems there are some that you think you may click better with than others.
If you were up in the thumb you could join our group. Our fair is next week, and I am going batty this week trying to get everything done!!!

Nope I am not in the thumb. We are in Monroe Co. The Monroe County Fair is the 1st full week in August. That is a good idea, I will ask ariound at the fair and call the extension office today. I mean the MSU extension office.

Wow... nice to hear opf all the fairs. Congrats to each one of our young poultry winners! My county fair is not until August 17th. Sometimes the heat really gets to the animals.

Good MORNING, everyone! Hope y'all have a great day ahead of you!

Light Brahma, alias - TWIN - hatched one - I've found a friend who has a double dog run w/a dog house on each side - IF they still have it - and I can't get ahold of them! grrrr - we'll be all set - otherwise, i have a dog cage that i'm going to take into the garage and put one of the hens in there w/the little ones - and hopefully find something else for the other hen! My hubby told me I should have done my homework before we ended up w/chicks! Feeling a little stressed we are! Hopefull the hatching will be complete by the end of the day or tomorrow morn and we'll be able to get these gals all set up! THANKS for the help! Nancy:D

Not sure when you called, but this is a really busy time for them, that may be why they are not calling back. Most don't accept new members until fall and quit taking them by March 1 or so, as that is the cut off, some are sooner. I think our club is Jan or Feb 1. Definitely talk to people while at fair, meeting them in person should help with the calling back. It is harder to ignore someone you have met and talked to in person, I would think.

Also make sure the club you are calling takes cloverbuds, as I think you mentioned that is what you had. Some clubs don't, it is up to the leader.

The extension office can give you all the info on starting a club, but I believe you must have at least 5 kids from at least 3 families and 3 leaders to form a club, or something like that. The time involved is how much you put into it, some hardly any, others spend hours and hours. Same with money. It shouldn't require a lot of money and the kids can fundraise anything they need, but occasionally it is just easier to buy stuff out of pocket. Up to you. Of course, there is always gas money running back and forth to things, but that is a given.

Nancy, take a deep breath, relax and everything will be fine.

By the way congrats.

Briana, I agree with Vicki and Blueberry, talk with people at the fair they are usually pretty helpful.
We had a lot of fun at the fairs, it was always a busy time but now we just get to relax and watch everyone. Our fair is usually the first week in August.

good morning all!

so many exciting things going on!

say some prayers for my hands to move fast today...i need to get the most chicken wire up that i can today. before i lose steam (and tying wire...i noticed we are almost out AFTER Rick got home last night!)

LOL, thanks soomi, I appreciate it. I did get nervous in the middle.

It went OK, I think... It was a first for me. The only other interview I have ever done was for my job here at the college and the two that hired me are fun-loving and outgoing. Their questions ended up taking a personal twist and we ended up laughing and talking FOREVER in the interview. The scholarship people... turned out to be EIGHT of them... were more professional, lets-get-this-done type. Very serious. I'm supposed to get a letter with a yes or no within a couple weeks. I'll let you guys know!
