It's done so that the cockerel doesn't develop secondary sex characteristics as pronounced as that of a rooster. But the main reason is that the bird grows to an incredible size, and puts on a lot of muscle(meat). It's done to quite a few different animals for various reasons. It is done to steers to produce oxen. An ox is a regular cow that has been castrated, that's why they grow so big and powerful.

I feel so dumb! I had no idea that oxen were castrated bulls, I thought they were a completely different farm animal. How did I miss that??? I have a masters degree in biology!

I should have gone to MSU.

I told my DH that I am planning on attending Chickenstock and bringing my daughter who is very excited about the chickens coming next year. He just rolls his eyes. But I remind him that not only did he promise ME, he also promised the Little Girl, so there is no going back now! He asked me how many I was planning on getting, and I said 11. Buff Orpington, Speckled Sussex, Barred Rock Australorp, Iowa Blue (possibly), Dominique, Mottled Java, Jersey Giant, Buckeye, Easter Egger, and Silver Laced Wyandotte. But then I'm just messing around on the computer and I saw a Columbian Wyandotte, and an Exchequer Leghorn and I'm thinking...hmmmm....I wonder if DH would notice if there was 15 and not 11...lol Anyway, I have about 9 months to change my mind. And then there is the rooster issue. I told him I wouldn't get one, but then I see so many beautiful ones on BYC and I just want one so badly! The neighbor dogs bark all the time so why can't I get one?? Seems logical right??
Anyway can't wait to meet some of you Saturday

Thats so exciting! Thank Elizabeth again for taking care of everybody.

I hope Hannah has a safe trip. I'd love to go to the DR. I've been around Latin America a little and the people really do need help, she'll be a blessing to them. Tell her to let me know if she needs any help with Spanish.

I know I worked late and had a few things to do before coming in and checking things out. I had a chick hatch under a broody on Monday. It was really kind of funny. Sunday was the hatch day, and twice I had to put that cold egg under the broody, so I really thought it was a goner. So, Sunday after I got home from work, I picked up the egg and shook it just a little while putting it to my ear. The peep was so loud, it almost scared the peep out of me. I was very happy when I got home Monday and had a little chick. (she did start with 3 eggs, but 2 came up missing.) So the little bugger is all by itself.
I really must get some pictures.
