Wonder if regular old Bag Balm would work? How often would you apply, Sam?

p.s. although it's a somewhat funny topic, this is really a serious thing...frostbitten combs can attribute to a loss of fertility in roos, believe it or not!

I heard the same thing but this is my first year in Chickens I hatched these last spring. They should start laying anytime. Hey if you hatch and want dorkings as soon as I prove my eggs I'll send ya some. I do know they are good eating as I had extra roo's and I put them in the fridge, they had double the breast meat of the other roo's which were buff and bared rocks. They were really good eating.

On the frost bite issue it is a worry. We got 9 inches over night and it is still coming down, boy they sure don't like to come out in this LOL I don't blame them I don't either.

Let me know when and where in May and who you would contact if ya got chickens to sell and I will see about gettting there. I should have some extra young pullets and roos to sell by then if I hatch all my planned hatches and they will be close to laying around then.

I do go to the Trenary swap it is run by a some chicken club. I haven't heard the dates yet.

It's like $5 to sell there if your not a member of the club.

Hey, Jean - when you have a chance, would you post some pics of your Dorkings?

Are you interested in a pullet swap this spring? I've got some Copper Black Marans from excellent bloodlines (Davis/Jeanne) in the bator as we speak...hoping I'll have a few extra pullets. I'd love to swap a pullet with you if you're interested!

You can get Dionne Frost Protection at Tractor Supply. I think a couple of times a week is going to be all I'll be applying it. I know that when I wash my hands after using it, it seems to repeal water. Since they won't be washing their heads I'm hoping it will last a few days. I think bag balm would probably work and I have heard of people using Vasoline as well. Just looked outside, man is it ever snowing hard. I'm just not ready for snow yet. The older I get the less enjoyment I get from snow. I used to cross country ski and snowshoe but the old joints protest much to loudly to ignore.

It's not snowing here today. There's just a light dusting left from last weekend. I still enjoy the snow, but that's because of my 3yr old son...he LOVES snow. Last winter, when he was 2, every day he wanted to go sledding with the atv. It seems like the brutal cold has set in much earlier for us this year. In the 7 years I've lived here, I don't remember it ever being so cold so early in November...it used to be at least December. The winter's are getting longer and longer around here...or is it just me?

There is one thing that keeps me in Michigan, Family!! I love my family more than anything and it is a good thing or I would be out of here in a heartbeat!! Now, I wouldn't be somewhere hot, don't like that either, somewhere in between, I am thinking. Not too hot, not too cold. Not too picky am I??? LOL

This is my first winter with chickens, and I'm really surprised at how well they're taking this cold. I've got 2, 5 week old Delaware chicks that are out in the coopshed (like my terminology?! lol ). They have access to a brooder with a heat lamp, but every night when I go out there to check on everyone after dark, those 2 are just snuggled up in a corner outside of the brooder. So I guess they're all right...if not, then they're just dum dums.
