I would love to raise my own beef, pork, etc but in reality I am not sure how cost effective it is.....chickens, and a garden this year are my first steps...canning, and freezing....and hopefully hunting and fishing.

We have a wood stove to get hooked up yet for heat....and i am pulling water from the rain gutters to water the garden...saves money easy set up....hubby who never appreciates any of my wild schemes is not fighting any of these ideas...well maybe slight resistance on the chickens but was overcome easily enough lol

I am still trying to fully convert him and convince him we need out of the ghetto city and into the country. I have committed it to prayer at this point,....

I am a wimp too but think i could get over it if it means i dont have to shop!!! lol Also these are scary times we live in. I was raised by depression era parents and I know how bad it can get...i want to be ready for whatever comes my way.

Thanks for your help, Sarah. I knew the wise people on a chicken forum would be able to help me with pigs.

Did you find anything local? I checked craigslist and Best Farm Buys, but I didn't find any for sale. It looks like a lot of people are wanting them though.

Dh has a customer that comes in to his shop once in awhile that raises them out in Lapeer, but he doesn't know him by name. So he's waiting for him to come back in.

What is a potato flake is it that instant potato stuff?

Yeppers----just instant mashed potato flakes!! I will probably post it in the recipe thread and I will let you know when I do.

My friend also gave me some of this-----the bread it makes is so, so good.
I just used what she gave me to make 2 batches of the cinnamom bread.
The sheet she gave me with it had the started recipe, so one of these days I will start growing some more!! I think on her recipe it says you can
freeze it---that way you can just take some out to bake with if you don't have 3 million friends to pawn it off on.
