Good Morning!

Cloudy up here, cloudier I think in the south east and a bit dampish?

Put 36 chicken eggs in the 'bator yesterday and 6 guinea eggs. Got 4 cute little keets in the brooder box. Really need to let the chickens out of the coop but my poor lower back is screaming now and then since I overdid the4 gardening 2 days ago. It's THIS CLOSE to going "out".

Being really careful today.

Ok, so I went to the feed mill and got some antibiotics for the chickens, I hope it isn't anything serious. Poor things they make me feel so bad. The antibiotics should start to work and they only have to be on them for 3-5 days. Any advice would be great. I have searched and searched and it only scares me.

DCM, I've spoken before to a Dr. at MSU regarding these same symptoms. He said just use the antibiotics for the recommended time period. Basically, he told me that if there's no deaths, no nasal discharge, no weepy eyes...it's just "seasonal allergies". A couple of mine are doing the same thing...I think it's just the crazy weather/fluctuating temps we've been having. Don't worry...they'll be fine.

Just follow the directions on the antibiotics to the T...and I would suggest treating for the maximum number of days it allows.

ETA: If you haven't brought any new birds home, then definitely don't get uptight and scared about possible disease.

Oh thanks shelley, I really needed to hear that. I am so upset, I couldn't stand to lose one of them. I haven't brought any new birds home except the day olds and they all seem fine. I really hope it is just an allergy or something simple. Poor things. Thanks for the encouragement I really needed it.

Well I know this weather is playing havoc with my sinuses and my kids!! My littlest one is on her third round of antibiotics for a sinus infection! First one seemed to work but it came right back, second one didn't work at all and half way through they switched her to a new one, this is only day 2 of the third one, so we will see.

Saying a prayer for your chickies!!

I've had the same thing happen a little earlier this year. All the chickens acted fine -- just had some clear nasal discharge and rattling sneezes. They are all fine now. I also gave some antibiotics. Although, I do think it was allergies/flucuating weather. Some never came down with it and it lingered longer in others. As long as they are acting like chickens, it doesn't get worse, and there are no deaths, try not to worry yourself too much. I know it's hard not to, though.

Thanks for all the advice. Another question can I give the chicks the antibiotics even though they are on medicated feed? The guy at the feed mill said to treat all of them. The little ones aren't sick at all and I am just wondering if that is to much med for them.

Sure don't seem right. We did have close to 1000 posts on them and now we are under 300. A little bit of warm weather and everybody splits, although the rain should bring a few people back on line. I know it did me.

It should not be a problem. The meds in chick feed isn't antibiotics so it should'nt interfer with them. You could ask Doc Brown at state vet supply. He answers his e-mails very fast.

Thanks, the feed mill guy said it would be fine. I think he thinks they are "just chickens" when they are my very loved pets. Just wanted another opinion.
