Cool! Thanks! Like mom says, she does not care shat kind they are, as long as they taste good. The eggs that is...

It'll be fun to see her hatch some eggs. I'm sure once she starts she will get addicted! Nothing as fun as chickies in the bator. I miss the waiting all ready.

My Javas are going great! They still resembled little penguins on their way to a dinner party. My Dixie Rainbows (meaties) came in that are only a few days younger. I added a few of the DR to my Java brooder so that I can compare growth rates. My goal is to develop a really good meat line of the Javas that will allow me to have eggs and eat them too

Sorry, couldn't resists. At over a week old the Javas are still larger than the meaties. It will be interesting to see how the progress over the next few weeks.

I have learned that I can't go swimming in the water here because my joints freeze up and then I can't move. I am not the most graceful person anyway but add frozen joints to the mix... not a pretty sight!

sleepy head! get some rest friend!

i hate swimming in lakes. no joke. i don't like not seeing the bottom or weird things touching me. ack. just ack.

that's why God made pools. and bath tubs. and saunas for that matter.

We have a big storm moving in right now. Lenawee County has a tornado warning looks like it will be headed across to us. Hubby will prob. have to go out with the F.D. to the corners of our township for incoming weather. I closed up the chickens for the night. This will be the first test for bad weather for the coop.
We got another coon today in the trap. This time a lot closer to the coop. Doesn't take them long to figure out where the chickens are, does it. Nothing has gotten to the chickens but there has been evidence of them hanging around. So better safe than sorry.

Me Too! I never should have watched Jaws at such a young age. Traumatized with a capital "T"

I even got a little nervous in pools for a few years

Dixie Rainbows are one of the meat breeds carried by S&G Poutry as an alternative to the CX. We are experimenting with the meat breeds this year to find out what works best for us. I want meaties that I can free range, act like chickens, and are healthy and active. What I am finding is that I like have a combination at the same time. We started with 100 Hubbard White Mountains (CX), added 100 Colored Range Chicks from J&M a week later, and now have 100 Dixie Rainbows in the brooder. The funny thing is that the Hubbard line is much more active than any of the CX we raised as kids. Plus as soon as I added the colored range birds to the tractor the CX started grazing almost as voraciously as the range birds. It will be interesting to see how the Dixie Rainbows do. The thing that I have appreciated the most with the range chicks and the DR is that I do not have to point out the food and water to them. They instantly know what to do. Also I can start using bedding (shavings) almost immediately. They will try it, but do not gobble it down. It took a week before I could add shavings to the brooder with the CX. Not much fun changing the newspaper and papertowel 2X a day.

Go check out the S&G Poultry site. http://www.sandgpoultry.com/ They are lovely people, and I will be ordering from them again. Plus they are working with the Delawares to develop a faster growing bird. They are not listed on the site, but I would like to try them out myself.
