Awww I am so sorry for your loss Mommi. These birds to me, are like my kids..know it sounds funny, but I call'em "my girls" and the roo's are spoiled rotten, even my nasty one "upside the head Fred" he attacks me daily if not more..but I figure if he's doing that to me, he will protect his gals.

Friend of mine, his dad raises turkeys for human Consumption: he told me that the way to raise healthy turkeys is to keep all other poultry away from them, as they die so ez from other birds. I dont know myself, not raising them...but he even said, if you have a pond, keep them away from that area. And make sure you keep them with other turkeys and not chickens. ducks, geese etc.

I don't know what was wrong with this little one.

Mommi....sorry to hear about your turkey. sometimes turkeys can be kind of weak. it's just the way they are.

i have found that turkeys do very well with other poultry. the key is not having blackhead disease on your property which the ag extension office will have on record for you. also, meat turkeys and heritage turkeys are very different from each other.

no matter, so sorry to hear this.

Is your hen laying at night or during the day? Sometimes their "clocks" are messed up and they're on the roost during the night and can't see to get down to their nest. If this is the case, time will correct this problem.

bourbons and any heritage breed are all one big breed basically that are bred from the wild turkey. they breed naturally and most will breed true.

as you know, because you've seen them, we have bourbons here and we rather enjoy them. easy temperaments and good health.

we have had some just drop as poults now and again, but that is not atypical for turkeys at all. hardest points in their lives are hatch and point of lay.

sounds maybe like you could of just had a weak one.

meat turkeys (broad breasteds) are FAST growing turkeys that cannot breed (generally speaking) on their own due to their large breast size and have to be artificially inseminated. many people refer to them as 'stupid' and yep, they are. (there is no gene pool, that's why)
they are not hardy, they have short term lives and that's what they are bred for.

i honestly think we get hung up on treating livestock like children or human beings. yes, they can be pets and we care about them, but truth be told, they are not going to all live and they aren't going to outlive tortoises and the like. they are chickens and ducks and whatnot.
they live 6 months to 8 years. they get diseases and have heart weaknesses like other animals. do the best you can for the time you have them. God gave us charge over them so take it and do it well. but to have a 'save them all' attitude, it wont work.

i don't think, by the way, that Mommi3130 has expressed that attitude. i think she was just wondering what happened. i am just stating my opinion on the whole 'oh my gosh, i have to save all the birds in the whole world' mentality that sometimes goes on. they are chickens. c h i c k e n s dang it.

Good morning,
caf.gif
an early day today, errands to run.
Chickflick, i am not sure when she is laying, the egg is there when I open the coop in the morning, so she could be laying during the night. I will just be patient.
Mommi3130, so sorry about your loss.

That's an interesting combo. What do the eggs look like??

Thats the question: what do the eggs look like..they are still shades of brown, but Im hoping for some purple eggs from these eggs/hatchings/layers once mature LMAO. No I dont know what color eggs the hens out of these will make...so its a project the grand babies and I are doing...ITS A HUGE MISTERY! lol

Kind of like coloring ones hair that has a well instead of city water..never know what color it shall be LOL

If you want a dozen or so, let me know. Ive got some in the bator now. Cant wait for them to hatch.

Thank you so much for the generous offer, but I have limited coop spacem and I'll need to just hold out for the Marans. However, if you end up with purple eggs -- now that just may be a reason for another coop!!

He just got his license. He waited because he did not see the sense in paying so much for drivers training. So this winter will be his first winter driving, so I worry of course, especially since he works 3rd shift.
