My luck in the past couple of days STINKS!!

Woke up last night to my pups next to my bed screaming. A pipe busted in the bathroom and flooded everything. The pups were crying as they were soaking wet. Then get that all cleaned up this morning and off to buy some kennel panels only to realise I didnt have the correct ball for my car hauler my SIL borrowed it. Then Im standing there and Jim says "you arent going anywhere anyway, look at you tire" Those tires are 20"ers and $219 each. OUCHIE. Then........off to walmart. Weeeeee here we go.

I was so excited to finally get a new digital camera. ONLY to get all the way back home and open the box and its used. GRRRRRRRRR Called Walmart to crab and they said they had one more like it, but it was used too. So now have to wait until friday to get one from their warehouse. But in the mean time I am using it.

Anywho, here is a picture of that tiny tiny pullet egg I found the other day along side this JUMBO egg and a regular size egg. Now you'll see why this egg reminded me of that cartoon. LOL

I'll post some pictures tomorrow of my grainery project and some of my new show birds.

Hope everyone enjoyed this beautiful weather we've had the last couple days. Praying for more sunshine tomorrow.

I have a question....

One of my favorite roos has a really nasty swolen black toe. His foot smells awful, AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE END OF THAT TOE IS DEAD. He did have really bad frost bite when we got him and one toe was all swolen then, but not black.

My questions is....
Will the black toe fall off or is it something I should take him to the vet and have looked at? I am doing a project with him right now and do not want to loose him. He is an old bird but does not act it. Will the infection kill him?

Morning all.

Man I wish that I would not take the weekends off. I am so lost on Mondays when I come in. To much work on weekends know that doing school.

Cut 2 1/2 face cords of wood on friday.
Cut 1 cord of wood on Saturday.
Cut 2 cords of Sunday.

All I can say it was nice to save money to buy a chainsaw that is great. Saved birthday money it adds up even when you pay with pennies..

Something funny happened this weekend with my hubby. Until this weekend, he had remained detached/indifferent to the chickens. He liked having fresh eggs, but that was about it. His employees have been falling all over each other, pretty much, laying claim to who gets to buy the next dozen of eggs that become available. They're all hooked. Since egg production went down a little bit, availability went down, too. We also decided not to heat the henhouse, and see how they do without added heat for the Winter (we have heat lamps that we can hang up in there if need be, but just didn't want anything more elaborate than that). Hubby's answer to the heat thing and lower egg production was.... get more chickens.

So as you know, I went out a week or so ago and brought home some cochins, an orpington and a couple of ameraucanas. I think that was when he started warming up to them. He really likes one of those cochins. Every time he looks at her he says, "That is one pretty bird." Well, you guys also know that I ended up with 8 more chickens and 5 ducks a few days ago. Over the weekend, hubby built a little duck house so he was in that area quite a bit. He really likes the ducks. He said they are "very cool". What surprised me was that he actually stood in the chicken/duck/sheep yard with me for quite awhile, admiring colors and feather patterns on the chickens. He took time to permanently screw in some branches that I had put in there for them to roost on. The ameraucanas immediately went over and hopped on. I said, "You know, honey, I really love having all these birds and seeing all the variety. It's so relaxing just to watch them." He said, "You know what? It's strange, but I really like them, too."

Never thought I'd hear him say that. I could tell he meant it, too.

Yaklady- Glad the chickens are rubbing off on your hubby!

Not sure about the roo with the black foot. It costs at least $40 to just take a chicken to the vet... maybe give him some antibodics in his water?

YakLady: I know exactly how you feel about your chickens. After husband passed away, I just more or less withdrew from everything. Didnt see the grand babies much, didnt do anything but sleep. Daughter told me to get out of the house and do something. So after she moved into her new place and got chickens, I was like "what you want them for, they are canibals" But after a few times going over her place and sitting in the yard watching them, I was hooked. Im happy for you that your husband is now enjoying them too. Makes it easier to bring some home again and again. LOL

It relaxes me so much that they are the first chores I do in the morning and the last in the evening. Ive never went out and counted my critters as I know they can take care of themselves. But these hens, well its like I am their care giver, and "I" have to protect them. Ive read on some show/breeder forums, that we are nuts for caring about our chickens like children. Well I can just say, it doesnt matter to me how ez an animal is to replace as far as cost. They are still part of my family/farm. And they bring me such joy now that they are a big part of my life.

Here's a picture of Hip-Hop she's a hoot. If Im walking with a cig in my hand, she'll jump up and steal it and run like crazy. She has such a great personality if you dont shut the door fast enough, she's right in the house. I never knew chickens could be such great companions.

Hillybilly Rooster: sounds like you had your share of cutting wood this weekend. But sure will be nice once cold weather starts.
