Hi everyone,
I live in Grand Ledge and am looking to start raising a few Wyandotte bantams (don't have a color pattern preference). Does anyone know of a good place to get some? I am totally new to this, so any additional advice would certainly be appreciated.

Hope this new adventure into raising some chickens turns out to be as fun as it seems.

Thanks

Sevenchickens,

WHERE in Metro Detroit?? I wanted a couple muscovies, and ordered some online from one of my favorite EE people..and I hatched out a variety of ducks- none were muscovy. I may try again. Let me know what you find.

Welcome, N&M!

Hey, Opa..... My little bantam, Currie, is broody again. How often do they do this? She finally just started laying for me again a week ago, and now she's being all p&@*y. Man! She's totally full of attitude when she's like this! She won't even let the other hens in the nest boxes. When I went to gather eggs this morning, all that had been laid at that point was a duck egg. Out of curiosity, I put the duck egg in the nest box that Currie likes to brood in. She immediately hopped in and started snuggling up to it. She sat on it like it was her own. Later in the day, I picked her up and saw that she had laid an egg. So now she's sitting on one of her eggs and a duck egg. I think I'm going to leave it and see what happens.

Hubby bought me an incubator! Yay!!!!!! Now I just need my darn Cayuga's to start laying. I can't wait to hatch out my duck eggs!

Caycee, Granny is sitting here trying to wish the snow away. I had told her that once the snow was gone we would coordinate coming to visit you. She is anxious to see the yaks.

Late this afternoon I started to go out to collect eggs and spotted a Cooper's hawk feeding less than 50' from my back door. Rather than disturb it I waited and watched. It took about 30 minutes of feather plucking before it had completely devoured its meal. After it flew off I checked to see what it had been eating. Nothing remained but feathers and a blood spot on the snow. Given the fact that many of the feathers had bright yellow shafts I'm pretty sure that it was a Northen Flicker.
I have read people stating that while they didn't witness it, they are certain a hawk carried off their chickens. While hawks will kill and eat chickens they can't carry one off. Watching one with a flicker, a bird only slightly larger than a robin, reinforced the knowledge that hawks eat their prey where they killed it. If you find a chicken missing don't blame hawks but look for another predator.

N&M! My daughter lives in Grand Ledge. You need to come to Chickenstock, it's just around the corner from you...at Delta Mills Park!! Would love to meet you!

That's what I was thinking and they may not have minimums if people want just a few chickens or want to try out different breeds without paying an arm and a leg (or a wing and a drumstick.)

Felt my wrist and it was there. So I get to enjoy another day. Yesterday I installed the toe kicks on my kitchen cabinets. Since installing the cabinets in my own kitchen I've built a dozen houses, trimmed 40 0r 50 more and completed countless other jobs. Plus several chicken coops and nest boxes. I think getting them done in less than 18 years is pretty good.

Good morning, Sam, and everyone yet to arrive!

...so I don't have any "older" babies available. Details and pics will be posted to my website sometime today.

Hope everyone enjoys the beautiful day it's shaping up to be. I little voice whispered in my ear this morning that spring is near...no more snow.

Sure hope that that little voice is right.

The chicks hatching now are from my blue/black/splash/grey pen. There's a pic of one of the grey chicks from last week's hatch on my website in the "for sale" section.
