Today I need coffee and lots of it!!

Yesterday was horrible, 2 of my dogs took off on me and were gone for an hr... I was so beside myself with worry, I couldn't think. They were having a merry old time in a field next door (in the hollow where I couldn't see them)... but I am a stickler about keeping them in my yard and not being a nusance to my neighbors... so I was really mad at myself.

Lastnight my pump on my 130 gal fish tank failed at 3 am.... luckily no flood, but it made a heck of a racket! all I'm seeing are $$$ signs...

DTE picked the perfect day to shut off the gas - heat - to my company..... Brrrr it's cold in here today! Makes me a bit upset to say the least (I'm the Facility "guy"). My service guy keeps trying to make me laugh about it, but I'm not finding it very funny just yet! neither are the other 200 people who are freezing with me!

How many posts does it take to make you a non-newbie?

Welcome to the board newer newbies!

I hope to meet some of you at chicken stock.

Where are you located, Dustin? The shipping cost will be split between the number of people ordering...so the more people that order, the cheaper it will be.

Since I will be ordering them, they will be delivered to me...then we'll have to work out a way to get yours to you.

I ordered 3 Gold Sex links, 3 SLW, 2 Sicillian Buttercups, and 4 Mille Fleur D'uccles. All pullets except the D'uccles, they are strait run. One little D'uccle was laying down and a little squished in the box not so great. I have given it some water with electrolytes. Now it it standing on it's own but still really weak. I hope I can get it to come around. Now they also added packing peanuts, 13 of them and I have no clue what they are. Here is a picture what do you guys think?

My under developed chick is doing much better. She seems to be eating and drinking on her own now, but I don't think she's ready to be put back with the others yet. The funny thing with her is, she was the biggest chick at the start. The others just developed much faster than her. Poor thing. She has taken a liking to Mr. Bear. She hides under his arm to sleep, and I almost paniced thinking there was a chick running around in the bathroom.

I just got back inside with our GSD Sophie, and it was snowing.

The buzzards are back circling around. I know they won't bother the chickens, but the chickens sure don't like them. They are staying real close to the pines trees, and are running for cover whenever they circle back.

I'm in Brown City...not EXTREMELY far from you. I've made the drive to Owosso before...not a bad ride. I could meet you in Lapeer to get them.

So I'll put you down for 1 jumbo pekin female and 1 male, correct?

Wow. I leave for one night and I come back to 5 pages of posts to read. Okay... grabbing a nice cold coke and catching up...

Briana1975 -- Looks like a Black Australorp to me.

You two are NOT helping.

Zephyr -- The French Toulouse are the ones I am looking at. I'm thinking a pair to let breed for next year plus one straight run for Christmas Dinner 2010 would do nicely. I'm assuming yours are young yet, but how do you like them?

My biggest concern with geese is the potential for aggression... anyone care to tell me how lovely geese are and how the aggression thing is just a myth?

Shelley - Do you ever get over towards Clio/Montrose/Chesaning by any chance? My husband goes that way fairly often so that could be VERY convenient...

We could bring Dustin's ducklings back to St. Johns from there if it would help, too.

I'm wondering if I should go out and check my ameraucanas to see if I have a broken hen. Found this in the nest box this afternoon. A jumbo egg weighs 2 ounces. This one weighs 3.75 ounces.

Well we got the coop roofed today, boy was it c-o-l-d! (of course, now the sun is shining and the sky is clearing up
hu.gif
) Here are some pictures of our coop (before roofing). If anyone has suggestions, please suggest away. Still have a lot to do (run cable for pop door, add vents, paint, add run....). Not sure about insulating yet, going to wait until fall and make that decision. We are also going to run electricity so we can use light and heat lamps if necessary.

Here is the door where we can go in and change food & water and clean out coop.

Top door is to access the nesting boxes. Bottom two doors are for storage.

51304_img_0528.jpg

Pop door. Still need to add ramp up to deck.
51304_img_0529.jpg

Window that opens. Door at bottom opens to clean out under roost.

Other window.

Roosting area (going to add one more roost). Our floor is made of that plastic decking wood so it should wash out nicely (got it free from a friend

Nesting boxes. Small area on top could use for storage, but I have a feeling the chickens will be up there

. Need to keep an eye out for eggs.

Now if it would warm up we could get the painting done.

WOW, Beautiful coop! I would add hardware cloth to the inside of the windows against preditors... you may have already planned that, but thought I would mention it

Yup already in the plans, but thank you for the info

It helps when you have an amazing husband

who is also a builder. He designed it all, just asked me what we needed (I would refer to my handy guide Raising Chickens for Dummies!

Be sure and come with him to Chickenstock. We can probably help change baby steps into flat out running.

Beautiful coop by the way.
