When our meat birds do this occasionally we feed them liver, chopped up. Seems to satisify whatever they are lacking that causes the pecking til bleeding. Cannot hurt to try.

Do you cook it? I was planning on liver for dinner this week. Looks like it will be tomorrow now.

No feed it raw. It is the funniest thing to watch them. Gross to cut it up though.

Maybe next time we are around we'll be able to stay for coffee, but we did make it to coldwater in time to get the other feed we needed and then raced home to get the 4 new banty's settled in and the 3 babies tucked in.

long day on the road (and of course rain most of the time) but was nice to meet shelly & you. looking forward to chickenstock when we can visit longer with everyone.

oh yeah opa... be sure and let me know when you'll be away from home awhile... so I can 'appropriate' some of your coops... and your compost barrels.

Morning all.

The rescue duck is doing well, afraid of me- but I dont believe it is a Pekin. Seems to be some call duck cross.
My duckling babies are growing and big and messy and I love them.

I worked so hard on repairing the flower bed fencing and preparing them for seed and put up trellises and had a very productive last weekend. The neighbor dog seems obsessed with my chickens and seems to be his main cause for barking, so I took six chickens to my brother in laws, including the jersey giants and I have a group of six babies still too small to go anywhere else- two polish, three phoenix, a silkie..I looked at the Phoenix and said, what a handsome little roo this is- "i think I will try to keep it for awhile, its crow cant be that bad, its too small." I have the turken and her eight bantie babies and Carmen, my original chicken
Yesterday, one of my three dogs got into my flowerbed (planted along the fence to the chicken yard)- with fencing higher than my hip- have no idea who did it, its pretty high- and narrow-and dug under the fence and made a hole into the chicken yard big enough for that little roo to get out and my husband found him dead back by our fire pit. The wiener dog gets a reprieve because I keep her in the house while I am at work.

It has totally just turned me off completely. I am ready to give all the chickens away, tear down the flower beds and call it quits. Between the darn neighbor dog barking and my dogs being idiots, I am done trying to have something I enjoy. Seems that if I enjoy it, it is either going to be destroyed or killed- rather the same thing in the end anyhow.
My dad is coming next month and installing a hot wire across my flower beds- however I have to keep it high enough that my big Sulcata tortoise wont walk into it and that means the beagle and the wiener dog will have clearance...the dogs are lucky I didnt have access to a live wire last night or I would have strung them all together and bbq'd them all.

Good morning Michigan. The coffee just finished brewing and today looks to be another good day. My neighbor came over yesterday to get eggs and brought me 10# of walleye fillets. Fixed some for supper last night and I think we'll have fish again tonight. I don't think you could find a better tasting fish. I will share the wealth and send David home with some as well.

M2M, sorry you are having so many issues with securing you birds. I would place the hot wire at 6" to keep the dogs out and the tortise will learn to avoid the wire as well.

Thanks for the help Vikki. I have some time to find one. Just don't want to wait until they are ready to start researching. I know we can do it if it comes to that. I am pretty busy now with keeping up with chores and trying to finish the firebird for my wife so slaughtering is one job I wont mind farming out.

YakLady, wish I could help with the ducks, but I'm new to the water foul myself. Maybe you'd have better luck posting in the duck section?

Guitartrist, I let the girls out to graze yesterday.. they just hung around the yard and drive way. I took a few photos I'll try to upload tonight. I think they're too nervous to go to the pond or stray too far yet.

mmmmm, fresh fish does sound good! We just bought some fishing rods this winter in hopes of getting out to go fishing. I wish my pond was deep enough to keep fish in so we could raise our own!

It was pretty crisp outside this morning, but it looks like it'll be fairly nice out later. Hope everyone has a great day!

A fine mornin' it is at that. Got a little chilly in the bator last night too. Not too bad though, got it back up and holding now. I would really like to wire in a thermostat. My lonely egg is still viable and growing right on schedule looking at the chart from Storey's book.

My trip to Newago Fair was a bust as it was cold and only 5 sellers came out. There was a good flow of buyers though. It all packed up and was done by 11:15 am.

Mom 2em all = am sorry to hear about all the trouble. That old saying when it rains it pours sure fits your situation. Don't give up the fight. You just need to reload, fortify the castle and update your weapons. he he

I use Wilcox Poultry here in Brown City. They processed my Rangers last year, as well as other birds. They're great people. If you haven't gotten their phone number already, just send me a pm and I'll give it to you.

LOL, it was quite a sight seeing the "gifts" they left behind for you too! I'm thinking about making a seperate house for them in my fenced garden area. They'll have a secure(er) area to be in at night and it's closer to the pond for them as well.

It was nice to meet you too... wish it wasn't so far away!
