Fellow Michiganders, joining you from rural Benton Harbor, Mi. Loved your deer stories. We have 10 acres, and see deer on and off. A couple weeks ago, we were surprised to see a doe near our bonfire area a little ways behind our chicken coop. It's the closest we've ever seen a deer. She hung around a little, then we didn't see her. My husband and I took a walk near the area to see where she went and didn't spot her. A few hours later, she appeared again. We watched her for a while, then saw her accompanied by a fawn take off from a small grove of trees close to the house. It was so neat! We think when we took our walk, she was bedded down with the baby and we couldn't see her.

We see deer almost every day. A few weekends ago, we swear we heard a fawn bleat in the woods next to our pond. There was a nice buck on the property last year. He'd been hit by a car during deer season and had half his rack was broken off. I would have taken him otherwise. He sure made a mess of my pines making his rubs! Hopefully he'll be around this year again.

Good Morning!

Ferret so sorry for your loss. It is never easy to lose a chick or adult bird.

We have deer here, they just stay in the tall grass, not in the mowed part.

Off to get chores done. Had a nice bike ride. Went a different route, so I need to drive it and find out the mileage. I am hoping for at least 6 miles.

Have a great day!

Sarah

Morning Everyone:

Looking for input on reduced egg production! There has been some disruption in the coop area and run but it has been quite for at least the last week. An addition was put on to the coop as well as some fencing was put up. The last week we have only been getting between 6 - 10 eggs and the size is smaller than normal. We have a flock of 30 and the oldest age is 2; the older hens completed a moult so that can't be the issue. Worms - really doubt it - we give the girls vinegar in their water....thoughts - any input would be appreciated; I don't want to have to send our customers to the STORE and DH just ordered my new license plate: GR8 EGGS!

Nancy, I've noticed a drop in production also. No changes here to blame either. Was wondering what is going on.

I've had quite a drop, as well. For awhile there, I was getting around 15 eggs/day from my 22 hens. For the last several weeks, though, it has dropped down to only about 8 eggs a day. I have been thinking it's due to the new chicks and ducklings. I've had a lot of hens go broody since the babies hatched out.

Good morning, finished my chores, drank some coffee and read my bible. What a great way to start the day!

Ferret: Sorry to hear about chipmunk. It just never gets easier does it?

Regarding Michigan deer, we lost three tomato plants, two cabbage, two etc. etc. the bugger walked right through the middle of the garden and tasted each row. Go figure. The Crow is back on the job. (a motion sensor sprinkler) That'll teach em'.

Welcome MIgourdgirl!

About egg production, it could be the heat and humidity, might be slowing some down. More due in a few days, heard it supposed to be 90, oh yeah!

Well, it's good to see that we're not the only ones w/reduced egg production. Everyone seems so healthy it just doesn't make sense to me - but geeze what in this world DOES MAKE sense! The lead story on the radio this morning was about a man in his early 20's who purposely turned his car radio up after being asked to turn it down! Geeze Louise!

Could the odd weather, bouncing from 90 and humid to 60 and chilly, effect egg production?

The other chicks are all doing well. A few have taken to hopping on a mini perch BF made for them and using it like a balance beam, running from one end to the other then jumping off and trying to fly.
