Some chickens sleep very heavily! In my old coop I went out to close it up for the night and found an oppossum in it!

Luckily he hadn't gotten into the chickens yet and they were all sound asleep. I chased that darn critter for 20 minutes in there trying to pin it down and kill it and the whole time they were fast asleep and just made the occational clucking at me if I bumped into them during the chase.

In my experience with the chickens I've raised they are very deep sleepers and you can do whatever you want with them with very little fight once they're sleep for the night.

She was just fine this morning clucking and running around with the others, so I'm guessing she did get herself in a trance or at least a very deep sleep.
I have seen comments about putting chickens into a trance like state and chickens doing that of their own accord. I know if I go out a while after they have all gone in the coop and fallen asleep, I can pet a few of them for a little bit before they fully wake up. Shmoo just let me pick her up and carry her around, no clucking or wiggling around, so I was concerned. It's good to know she's not sick!

A kind of related matter, how many eggs a week are Silkies supposed to lay? I've seen that it should be 3 a week, but I'm not so sure now. Shmoo seems to lay one every other day, and even laid two days in a row.
We don't eat many eggs through the week, we got chickens more as pets so I choose some chickens that I thought wouldn't lay so often. If all the hens take after Shmoo I'm going to have to send eggs to friends and family! I know BF's mom wants to see the Americauna's eggs, and I'm sure his nieces and nephews will want them.

Still no eggs from my pullets! ARGH!

My husband keeps asking and I keep telling him "Any day now"....and then I go feed the chickens and tell them "Any day now!!". I've got to get some new pictures of them, they are fanstic.
Is there any swaps coming up here in Michigan? Something that also allows other animals would be great! I've got some show rabbits available...English lops, Belgian hares and English Spots. My website link is listed below in my signature.
Does anyone know where I can find a breed standard description for the Speckled Sussex? Or maybe a breeder who shows? I have some that seem to carry a high-white factor and I love it but before doing some hatching I want to find out if that is a desired trait for the breed.
Thanks! Hope everyone has their heat lamps ready...it's supposed to be chilly weather later this week!!!

What a cutie! (Both of them.) I don't think either of my kids hit 13 lbs until well past their 6 month check up. My oldest was only 17 lbs at 1 year! LOL!

I do believe there is one more swap at the stockyards in St. Louis this year (I thought they went through Nov. but have heard this year Oct. is the last) anyway, I believe it's the 9th. I can confirm that date and let you know if you'd like. They accept all small animals -- poultry, water fowl, rabbits, goats, etc., etc.

RIR, they are adorable!!! My daughter will be 12 weeks tomorrow! She weighed 12lb 3oz at her 2 month visit. I feel like my little baby is gone already. We will have Superman arms from lugging them around!

That costume is PERFECT! My 4 year old INSISTS that she is going to be Snow White and her little sister is going to be one of the dwarfs! I might try to figure out how to make a cute little girl dwarf costume.

Snicker! The same thing has been happening at my house. I am SO ready for all the chickens to be laying eggs.

I all so would be interested in if there is a swap coming up. I am looking to thin out some of my roo and find a Speckled Sussex roo for my hen.

I will also be interested in the answer to the high white factor in the speckled Sussex.

Hope everyone is having a great day.

I have 4 pullets hatched on 3/30/10 (1 RIR, 1 SLW, & 2 GLW) that I would like to rehome. One of of GLW and the SLW have some of their back feathers picked, but they are growing back now. The RIR and 1 of the GLW are perfect. I think we are a bit over crowded and these are the 4 that we really haven't gotten attached to. Don't want to be too crowded come winter. Anyone know of someone that would like to buy these girls at a cheap price? Please let me know!

I may have a nicely marked roo for you if you're interested! I picked up a couple of young ones at a swap to bring in two more pullets and it's looking more like at least one is a roo. Let me know if you're interested!
