Keyt-
my girls love goofy hats! I just ordered chicken hats off one of the auctions. I ordered four colors. They are adorable. I always wished I could knit or crochet- and now its too late (arthritis). My son would never wear a hat- even as a baby he would throw a fit.

Rain was not in my plans today. It rained on me during our bonfire last night. Now, its still going on out there- at least I got the mounds of leaves cleared up out of the backyard before the tree laughed at me and brought down more. My ducks and chickens were pretty happy about the yard being leaf-blowed and raked. They ran from the blower but circled back to check out the paths I was making.

I hope you all have a great day- despite the rain. My husband has gone hunting again, and I have to go fix my mother-in-laws fence. Somehow that doesnt seem fair, but at least it will be a quiet day.

Very cool pumpkins, RIRJen!!

Nice pumpkins Jenny - I really like the one with the star theme

No rain here, bright and sunny. We got the coops cleaned out so the chickens are happily pecking through the old shavings, as if they hadn't ever seen them before.

I hope everyone has a blessed Sunday

Started carving pumpkins today, then stopped in frustration as a design I was in the middle of carving started to collapse.
The chickens were unsure of the pumpkins bits, but after a taste they all started eating them.
I did notice that our black silkies are getting some pretty big combs and one has some plum coloring on it's newly developed wattles. I don't imagine silkie pullets have reddish wattles and knotty looking combs do they?

Our americauna, which we have been calling Curly, has taken to roosting. Not on the roost, but on the wire cage around the radiant heater.

Going to have to put up a screen to keep her off of there, because when it does get cold enough for it to kick on, it will get far too hot for her to be sitting on. The heater also sits above the waterer so all night long she's pooping in their water, and that has to stop.
The others roost on the roost itself or on the edge of the poop board. Our littlest silkie can't quite jump high enough to get to either, so I set her up with the others.

Did somebody on here post about a vet in Frankenmuth who sees chickens?
We had our first hawk attack and the chicken survived but she does had a large gash on her neck. We used sterile saline to rinse and treated with antiboitic. I am thinking that if she does well she might need that neck sewed up.
I just have to add - Kudos to my turkey tom Henry who kept up the warning call. I was working on my horse fence and did not even realize there was an attack. The perp was sitting on the back of my house. Worthless dog was taking a nap.

Kristen, a fellow chicken raiser at work talked w/me this last week about a hen of hers that was attacked by a dog...it was a pretty severe attack and she sewed it up herself w/needle/thread....she said the hen just sat there w/no reaction and survived just fine - giver er a try! Certainly gave me more incentive to try it on our own!

Kristin,

Put some blue kote on her, that stuff works wonders. It will heal on its own unless it is really bad. If there are puncture wounds, they need to heal from the inside out or the infection could stay deep inside and kill her. I would keep her on antibiotics, put blue kote on, it has saved many an animal here!

Ditto that. Superglue is some good stuff for cuts and gashes. I agree with Vicki about puncture wounds, if you can, leave 'em open so they can heal from the inside out.

KrisRose - Don't mean to pester you I just want to make sure you got my PM yesterday. My inbox was full and it said "Could not save to sent messages" but I thought it sent it even if it didn't save it for me, but just want to be sure it actually went. If not let me know. Didn't want you to think I was ignoring you.
