Hi chicken lovers. I am very new to the chicken scene. I am a single Mom who loves to show her kids how to enjoy life in unusual, healthy ways. So I got my lil ones 5 newborns. We are in week 1 still and the kids are reading to the chicks at bedtime and hand feeding them. It was a great idea to get chickens and very therapeutic for all 3 of us. It will be equally exciting when we start getting eggs.
What is Chickenstock. We would probablly like to go.

I don't think I will make it to chickenstock, but was wondering if anyone was going to the small animal auction at Belle Feed tomorrow, (5/19/07). Its at the Gobles store again this year. I think I may go. I just love to see all the birds, and of course we need to pick up some feed, so we will be there anyway, may as well hang out for a minute or two.

Rooster Wanted!!! I posted this somewhere else but will post here too. I managed to keep 39 out of 39 chicks alive this spring, seventeen of which I hatched in our bator. Wouldn't you know it, the kids' FAVORITE CHICKEN met with an unfortunate accident at about 8 weeks . We are all sick over it and the kids feel so bad. He was one of our first two peeps we got this spring. He was a Golden Polish with a black crest, that's the balck/buff laced witha pure black crest. Stach was his name. His pal Stella is missing him, too. The kids say we'll nver replace Stash but I was hoping that if I could find a chick like him it might ease the pain a little. It's so hard for kids when they lose a pet. So, Michiganders, here's my plea. Does anyone have a new rooster like that that they would be willing to part with? Or does anyone know where I can get one? Are there any more swap meets coming up? Thanks

Hello, Chalk one more up for the northern MI area. I live in Antrim county. We bought 11 hens from somebody in town a couple months ago and I've been lurking around this site ever since. I have wanted chickens ever since we moved up here from detroit a few years ago but it wasn't untill we got horses and somebody told my wife they would help with the flies that she finally let me get some. We still have plenty of bugs so I think I finally got her to agree that we need about 2 dozen more. Does anybody up here have some fertile eggs I could buy off them?? 2 of our hens have gone broody and I'd love to try letting them hatch them out.

Thanks
Rod

Hi Rod! congrats on the chickens, (and the horse:) )
I have standard size light brahma eggs right now if your interested in something like that...????

Let me know, I'm a Michigander too, South Haven!

Hi Rod, I don't know where Antrim county is but I bought 24 fertile eggs from a guy in Owosso. Don't know how far that is from you. 21 out of the 24 were fertile and we hatched 17. Four did not make it out of the eggs, poor things. I think we had a pretty good hatch nevertheless. He has many different kinds of birds - frizzles, cochins, polish, marans etc. If you are interested in that I can give you his email address.

My DH and I live on a 2.5 acre farm in Benton Twp. Like many of you, we are newbies. Our 25 babies arrived on April Fools’ Day -- two days early!

We started with 5 NHR pullets and 20 CornishxRocks. Actually, 21 . . . Mt. Healthy sent us a spare. Of the Rocks, 11 are in the coop & 10 are in the freezer. The 11 survivors will remain in the coop until we either 1) scrounge up the will to finish the job, or 2) find someone else to finish the job (my preference).

Speaking of finding someone else to do the job, the Miller family (over near Charlotte) processes chickens. Frostychicken, I believe their number is 517 541-1081. I’ll try it myself and get back to you. I do recall that one has to call before 9 am or between 4 & 5 pm to catch them in their barn (they have no phone in the house). Last I heard, they were charging $2 each.

I don’t know how much that will help me, as the worst part of the day was going out in the evening to sit with the girls and watching them look for the roos. I sat out there and bawled for about 30 minutes! The Reds (Jane Marple, Dora the Explorer, Twisted Sister, Mrs. Batty, and Bianca) kept climbing up onto my boots and looking at me -- I guess trying to decipher the weird sounds Mom was making!

At least I had privacy. That -- and being able to run down to the coop in my nightshirt and boots when I saw the coop door open one morning -- is what I love about country life.

I will have a few extra silky roos if anyone is interested.....out of 5 its looking like 4 are roos, they are blue/black and one partridge.Ive bought from the guy in Owosso too,i have 2 dozen in the incubator from him right now, welsomers, marans and pendesencas due on the 26th.

Hello All-

I just registered to the site, tho I must admit to lurking for a bit now.

My Birds
Hens: 7 Barred Rocks , 8 Black Australorps, 5 Buff Orpingtons.
Pullets:( 5 weeks old on 6/09/07) 5 White Rocks, 5 Americaunas, 4 Barred "Rock-o-lorps", 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Cornish X.
Roosters: "Christopher Bawkins" a big Barred Rock and "Pecky" the oafish Black Australorp.
Ducks: 3 Fawn Indian Runners known as "Mija, Beckham, and Trudi"

Does anyone know where I can purchase a few more pullets? I've convinced a buddy of mine that he needs a couple birds of his own.
The only place I know of to buy birds locally is Belle Feeds, and apparently they're out of stock for the season.

I live in Portage and anything w/ in an hours drive would great.
I figure a couple Buff Orpingtons would be great for him, and I sure would love a couple Light Brahmas.

Anyway, I sure do like the site, it's been quite helpful. You all are a wealth of information.

Thanks-

I have no idea how far it is for you, but Townline hatchery is where I got my birds and its in Zeeland MI. They ship also, and I'm sure for you it would only be one day, because your close. I think they have a "minimum" order though of 25 birds.

Time to find some more friends who need chickens!! Google townline hatchery and they have a website. Mine are all healthy and happy at 6 weeks.
