I'm embarrassed to mention that I've gone over 2 weeks without cleaning the dropping boards in the rainbow flock coop. I finally got it done this afternoon and for those of you who don't utilize one you are doing yourself a disservice. I removed 10 gallons of droppings that would have been on the floor had I not used the catchers. In this coop I build two trays that are 4' square and suspended with chain 6" below the roosts.
I did have a unusual accident with the rainbow flock. Somehow one of my ISA browns got her head wedged between the wall and the dropping board. She wound up breaking her neck. While accidents happen why did it have to be one of my nicest ISAs? Oppsey had given me two last spring and they were beautiful. They are reddish gold with a darker red lacing. My other ISA is pretty typical for the breed with the random white feathers. I guess it isn't right to wish it could have been the ugly one, but .............
Today's firewood was a very nice honey locust, courtesy of GC DPW. It's all cut, spilt and mostly stacked. Some went to my good neighbor. Have more to move and stack tomorrow, but I need a few more pallets. It looks like I'm building a pallisade for my keep!
I'm Pam... have five chickens (adopted a Cornish chick accidentally who's now brining quietly in the fridge), three cats, a dog, two kids, a husband, and board a couple of horses, ... but would like to add more dual-purpose chickens. Heh. Just finished our coop and will be moving our four hens (2 RIR, one Australop, and one unknown) and one rooster (looks like a Barred Rock but more likely a Black Sex-link) into their new digs tomorrow. Maybe post a picture (It seems complicated!)
Thanks for all your good information and friendliness.
Found the cutest little fart egg in the middle of the coop today. Yay! another pullet is laying. I got some pretty good grades in my classes and my GPA is high. Life is good. The weather just needs to dry up so I can get some crops into the ground!
The freedom rangers have seemed to settled in nicely, they've been here for almost a week, no deaths and everyone is running around happily. So far I am very happy with this purchase!
oh my god...can someone tell me who is doing the rain dance so I can smack them?
My poor babies are running around in mud...going to have to pick up a bale of pine tomorrow to soak up the muddy runs.
Egg production is eggcellent (bwahahaha) right now and my bators are full! As long as all goes to plan I will have a bunch of Speckled Sussex and Silkie chicks for Chickenstock! I have been handing out fliers to everyone and anyone who even mentions poultry and plan on hanging them at the local feed stores when I stop in next week.
Very eggcited (mooohooohahahaha) to see everyone and play with chickens!!!

Congrats on the new puppy, MCW! Is there anything better than a puppy to pick you up and keep you busy (not like you NEED anything else to do, right)? Sounds like a great breed combination! Can't wait to see pics.
